From Library Journal
Mere exercise is passe; one now follows a total diet/exercise/attitude program. Here, two fitness mavens offer their respective plans. Smith, known for her WalkFit program, aims to establish "optimal" eating habits by outlining a food plan for three different body types, although she is rather vague on the distinctions. Menus and recipes emphasize a proper balance among carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The accompanying exercise regimen consists of aerobics, weight training, and stretching. Walsh is a top New York City aerobics instructor and personal trainer whose DIVA (Determination, Integrity, Vitality, and Aspiration) plan aims at building self-esteem along with strength. Walsh concentrates primarily on exercise, also covering aerobics, weights, and stretches, with sets of activities linked to ascending "progressions." No specific menus or recipes are provided; instead, attitudes about food are explored as individual awareness develops. Either of these books would be suitable for libraries needing to update their fitness collections.?Susan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. From Booklist
In a well-organized diet and exercise guide, fitness guru Smith encourages readers to "create your own miracle" by adopting sensible eating habits and a consistent exercise program. Smith presents nutrition guidelines before offering three eating plans that address different needs (e.g., for foods higher in carbohydrates or for more low-fat meals), and she includes recipes for many of the suggested dishes. She concludes with illustrated directions for strength and flexibility exercises and with further exercise advice. Sue-Ellen Beauregard
