From Booklist
Conant's Dog Lover's series is aptly named; those who are not crazy for canines may not fully enjoy stories that use such phrases as "on the other paw." For the unabashed fido fancier, however, these tales are tastier than liver treats. Writer Holly Winter, author of a regular column in Dog's Life magazine and a new book called 101 Ways to Cook Liver, is a protagonist who puts her pets above anything and everyone else--even her veterinarian fiance, Steve Delaney. Luckily, Steve is almost as nuts about dogs as she is and has three of his own. Before they can become a five-dog family, however, Holly must figure out why several women, all with some connection to her, have been violently murdered in the greater Boston area. With much support from her two Alaskan malamutes, Holly investigates the crimes and tries to keep herself out of harm's way. Though a tail-wagger more than a page-turner, the story undoubtedly will teach readers something new about their canine companions. Jenny McLarin

Bride and Groom: A Dog Lover's Mystery

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The future looks promising for Holly Winter. Her regular column in Dog's Life magazine is going strong. Her successful new dog-treat cookbook - 101 Ways to Cook Liver - has canine-lovers (and her own Alaskan malamutes) panting in anticipation. And she's about to marry Steve Delaney, her handsome veterinarian (and a Best of Breed himself). More the pity that murder is spoiling the mood. And Holly can't help but take it personally...

The first victim is an anesthesiologist, murdered in a Cambridge hotel only a mile from Holly's home. The second victim is a friend of Holly's who published a canine version of the tarot. The third is an expert who used touch to heal traumatized animals. And the fourth was a fellow dog writer. What's more, they were all female, and each with a connection to Holly. Now, the killer has promised a next victim. Who will it be? Holly fears that she herself fits the profile. How can she stop him from killing again? If she wants to make it to her wedding day, she'd better get a clue.

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

In Susan Conant's latest tale of malamutes and murder, Bride & Groom, Dog's Life magazine columnist Holly Winter is riding high: her new dog-treat cookbook is a hit and she's soon to wed a well-bred vet. The only hitch is the string of corpses among her human acquaintances. This cute-as-a-puppy cozy is sure to be a growling success with the canine crowd, but the almost incidental crime-solving will leave some readers feeling they barked up the wrong tree. Library Journal

Canine aficionado Holly Winter-columnist, dog-treat cookbook writer, and about-to-be bride-finds herself at the center of a circle of murder. Four female friends have been done in, and she aims to find out why. Essential for most collections. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

All those in favor of Holly and Steve's wedding wag your tails and woof. Before three malamutes, one pointer, one German shepherd, and their owners, doggie cookbook author Holly Winter ("101 Ways to Cook Liver") and divorced veterinarian Steve Delaney (The Wicked Flea, 2002, etc.) walk down the aisle, however, there's unfinished business to tend to. No fewer than five Boston-area women-an anesthesiologist, a dog tarot reader, a dog healing-touch practitioner, a plagiarizing dog journalist, and a married vet-will be bludgeoned to death. Between gown fittings, bridal showers, sparsely attended book signings, and blissful moments (at least for her charges) in which she hands out dog treats, Holly not only spies her best friend Rita's supposedly loyal lover in flagrante in a parked car but discovers the connection among the five victims. Unfortunately, the killer's reaction is to continue as before, leaving poor, aged Uli a canine orphan and creating a few empty seats at the Holly/Steve nuptials. The plot's not as well-behaved as the dogs, but there's not a cat-writer around with Conant's wit and breezy sophistication. Agent: Deborah Schneider/Gelfman Scheider
