From Publishers Weekly
It shouldn't be surprising that the powerful New York baseball team should offer their own perspective to compete with the plethora of Yankees-related titles celebrating the team's centennial anniversary. This coffee-table volume includes 175 exceptional photos from throughout the century, with stills of the greats (both posed and in action): Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, Lou Gehrig and Don Mattingly. The book-which includes contributors such as Bill James, Roger Kahn and Keith Olbermann-details the construction of the present-day stadium (which, begun in 1922, took only 284 days to complete), as well as the team's greatest moments and best lineups. From Booklist
This is the "official" commemoration of the Yanks' one-hundredth season, a flashy compilation full of photographs that manages to be both over- and underdesigned. It is huge and heavy and hard to read and written by committee. However, that committee includes Robert W. Creamer, Peter Golenbock, Roger Kahn, and Keith Olbermann. The obligatory sections on Ruth, DiMaggio, and Mantle are fine, and there are two nifty sections by the NY/NJ Chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association on an All-Time Yankees Team and the Top 25 Moments--always fun and always fun to argue over. There's a lovely tribute to Bob Sheppard, the gentlemanly and godly voice of the Yankees for half a century. There are an uncommon number of photos of Derek Jeter and a cogently argued piece by Bill James on why the 1998 Yankees were the greatest baseball team of all time. Excellent browsing wherever there are Yankees fans. GraceAnne DeCandido
