Manual of Medical-Surgical Nursing Care: Nursing Interventions and Collaborative Management

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This thorough, portable, and clinically-focused reference offers quick, easy access to clinical information for the care of the medical-surgical patient. Content is organized by body system and provides a quick review of pathophysiology, physical assessment, diagnostic testing, collaborative management, and patient/family teaching and discharge planning data for each disorder. The presentation for each condition provides a hierarchy of data that assists in making nursing diagnoses and planning interventions specific to each patient.

New to this Edition: The most recent NANDA Taxonomy II nursing diagnoses are included for each disorder. Sections on Pain and End-of-Life Care are now included to highlight these important topics in patient care. The newest infection prevention and control guidelines recently issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are included in the appendix and incorporated throughout the manual. Cancer content has been consolidated to provide a quick and thorough reference. Expanded coverage of endocrine, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and musculoskeletal disorders includes new discussions of Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Hyperparathyroidism, Hypoparathyroidism, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Cholangitis, and Rotator Cuff Repair. Key Features: A consistent, easy-to-use format enhances the quick-reference feature of this book. Standard headings for each disorder include Assessment, Diagnostic Tests, Collaborative Management, Nursing Diagnoses and Interventions, and Patient-Family Teaching and Discharge Planning. The attractive and functional two-color design highlights key information for quick, easy reference. Expert contributors from various practice settings provide the most current and accurate information. Highlighted cautions throughout stress key points related to various disorders and conditions. Outcome criteria are included with timeframes, where appropriate, to facilitate the evaluation of care and to help users set more realistic goals for nursing outcomes. A variety of information resources provide additional information and patient teaching services ￯﾿ᄑ including websites, when available. General information that is relevant to many disorders is highlighted ￯﾿ᄑ including perioperative care, pain, cancer care, psychosocial support for patients/family/significant others, and end-of-life care. Information is summarized in tables and boxes, where appropriate, to enhance clinical usefulness.

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review

Reviewer: Deborah Garrison, RN, PhD (Texas Woman's University)Description: This manual provides a concise review of pathophysiology, physical assessment findings, diagnostic tests, NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnoses Association) nursing diagnoses, NIC (Nursing Intervention Classification) nursing interventions, collaborative management, outcome criteria, and patient/family teaching. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference for staff nurses and student nurses in a concise format. Clinical information of this nature formerly was found only in medical-surgical textbooks or large manuals. This is the first reference of its size to feature the application of nursing diagnoses and interventions to more than 145 health alterations. Audience: This manual is intended for staff nurses on medical/surgical units as well as undergraduate nursing students. I believe it is appropriate for its intended audience. There are over 20 contributors to this project who are either nursing faculty or clinical nurse specialists in the areas they author. Features: This book provides nurses and students with a comprehensive, readily accessible review of over 145 diagnoses/health alterations, can fit into a lab coat pocket and, yet, the headings make it easy to read. A unique feature is access to Mosby's Online Nursing Care Plan Constructor through a password located inside the cover of the book. Assessment: This text provides an excellent resource for nurses in a variety of settings. As a faculty member who teaches undergraduate health assessment, I find its pathophysiology and health assessment content useful to set the stage for class discussion. It would also be excellent as a resource for preparing for patient care during clinical rotations. This is the fourth edition and is updated with the NIC taxonomy of nursing interventions, as well as with outcome criteria that are specific, positive statements that facilitate evaluation of care.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)Description: This is a 5th edition, 775 page soft-cover reference manual for medical-surgical nursing. It is organized first by body systems and then by medical diagnoses. However, much of the content is nursing oriented including teaching, discharge planning and referrals. The last edition was released in 1999. New to this edition are outcome criteria and timeframes with the nursing diagnosis.Purpose: This book is a thorough, clinically focused reference designed to enable both staff and student nurses to plan and evaluate care of the adult medical-surgical patient. It is interesting that the purpose is to assist nurses "to plan and evaluate" but the title includes "Interventions and . . .Management." All of those elements are included but this is not a "how-to" book. There are NO illustrations or photographs, so if there is an intervention listed that a nurse does not understand, additional resources will be needed.Audience: "Staff and student nurses can use this reference to obtain clinical information formerly found only in medical-surgical textbooks or large manuals. It is the first reference of its size to feature the application of nursing diagnoses and interventions to more than 145 health alterations. A consistent, easy-to-use format is incorporated to enhance the quick-reference feature of the book." I sure wish I had had this book when doing care plans as a student! Now I find it helpful when faced with an unfamiliar diagnosis.Features: "Focusing on NANDA-approved nursing diagnosesthat are specific to each disorder, the manual provides a brief review of pathophysiology, physical assessment, diagnostic testing, collaborative management, and patient/family teaching and discharge planning data." This is a basic outline of the content presented with each medical diagnosis covered. Although there are several contributors the chapters are equally well-written and quite comprehensive.Assessment: This is an information-packed little manual. I like it but please do not make the type size any smaller; the nursing workforce is aging, you know! I get bogged down with no illustrations, single-spaced outline type reading BUT this is a reference manual, not a textbook. There are some updates and other changes from the previous edition, but the basic content has not changed significantly. I think this would be an excellent addition to all medical-surgical nursing units, maybe a nice gift from a nursing school to its preceptors.
