Its purpose, as stated in the preface to the first edition, is "to provide the clinician with a body of knowledge concerned with the interactions between people and the natural environment." It is an informative, practical, well-written, and richly illustrated book about the practice of medicine in remote locations and extreme environments. Dr Paton's foreword describing the medical and environmental challenges faced by the Lewis and Clark expedition is fascinating.
