Book Description
The Renaissance is arguably the most significant period in the history of art. Earls provides biographical chapters for each of the 10 most famous artists from the European Renaissance, including Alberti, Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and others. Each chapter traces the childhood and artistic development of the artist, recounts in vivid detail his most noteworthy creations, places his work within artistic, cultural, and philosophical (often religious) contexts, and examines the ways in which he influenced subsequent generations of artists. A timeline, chapter bibliographies, a glossary of terms, and a subject index provide additional tools for readers researching artists from this unparalleled period of artistic creation and rebirth.

Artists of the Renaissance

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The Renaissance stands as, arguably, the most significant period in the history of art. Author Irene Earls provides biographical chapters for each of the ten most famous artists from the European Renaissance: Alberti, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Fra Filippo Lippi, Giotto, Leonardo, Mantegna, Masacio, Michelangelo and Raphael. Each chapter traces the childhood and artistic development of the artist, recounts in vivid detail his most noteworthy creations, places his work within artistic, cultural, and philosophical (often religious) contexts, and examines the ways in which the artist influenced subsequent generations of artists. A timeline, chapter bibliographies, a glossary of terms, and a subject index provide additional tools for readers researching artists from this unparalleled period of artistic creation and rebirth.

SYNOPSIS

An indispensable biographical encyclopedia of artists from this most important period in art history.

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

This slim reference focuses on ten Italian Renaissance artists (e.g., Leon Battista Alberti, Filippo Brunelleschi, and Andrea Mantegna) who contributed significantly to the fields of sculpture, painting, and architecture from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Arranged alphabetically by last name, the chapters provide not only brief biographies of the artists but also extensive details on their most important works as well as critical analysis. The black-and-white photos sprinkled throughout add a nice touch, as does the color insert, but the real value of this source is its scholarly yet accessible treatment of what is probably the most influential period in the history of art. The series also includes Leslie Ross's Artists of the Middle Ages and Elisabeth L. Roark's Artists of Colonial America, which follow a similar format.
