FROM THE CRITICS

Lisa M. Colletti

This is a well known, well established, comprehensive textbook of surgery. This is the seventh edition, updated from the sixth, which was published in 1994; the new edition has been appropriately updated relative to advances in the field. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive textbook of surgery for surgical trainees. This comprehensive surgical textbook is appropriate for medical students, surgical residents, and surgical practitioners and faculty. The chapters have been written by highly qualified, nationally known surgeons, who are generally experts in the fields about which they are writing. Basic patient care issues and physiology are covered, and a detailed discussion is provided in the areas of general, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery. There is also a brief overview of the main surgical subspecialties, including neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, gynecology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. This is an excellent source of information on clinical surgery. The only flaw is the relatively less thorough discussion of many areas of basic science that are pertinent to surgery. Overall, this is an excellent textbook of surgery and should be included as one of the recommended and potentially required textbooks (of a list of three or four) for medical students and surgical residents.
