FROM THE CRITICS

Stewart C. Wang

This pocket-sized companion handbook is designed to be an easy to access reference with a concise synopsis of surgical topics covered in detail in the companion book. This handbook has been updated from the 1994 edition. The purpose is to provide a portable reference with answers to basic surgical questions when access to the companion text is limited. As such, this book is limited in scope and depth of information. This handbook is most appropriate for medical students and junior housestaff. Senior surgical house officers and practicing surgeons may occasionally find it useful to refresh their memory or to use as a template for teaching more junior housestaff, medical students, and non-physicians. It is purposefully compact enough to easily fit into a lab coat pocket. The cover is water-resistant and the materials are durable. The chapters are concise and generally well-written in outline form. Suggested improvements include increasing the number of figures and tables as well as a more consistent application of outline formatting hierarchy. This is a concise and portable book that will be useful to medical students and junior housestaff for quick reference. Since it is organized with the same chapter format as the companion text and based solely on the materials in that book, this handbook is also useful as a study guide when the larger book is being used as a basic surgery text.
