FROM THE CRITICS

Stewart C. Wang

This is the seventh edition of a comprehensive review of surgery that has been substantially revised from previous editions. The stated purpose is to provide an up-to-date and thorough educational tool for medical students, surgical trainees, and practitioners. This book is written primarily as a comprehensive presentation of the field of surgery for medical students and surgical trainees. Sufficient depth of information is provided so that it is also of great utility for continuing education and the reference needs of practitioners. The editors are authoritative figures from medical schools throughout the United States. This large review is divided into two major parts. The first is composed of 12 chapters, each of which deals with subjects that transcend organ systems such as shock, infection, and trauma. The second part is composed of chapters that cover a specific organ system or surgical specialty. In general, each chapter topic is clearly and logically presented. Specific disease processes are covered with sections on pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management. Black-and-white figures are used appropriately to illustrate and emphasize text discussion. Extensive though somewhat dated bibliographies are provided for each chapter. A comprehensive index is also provided. This book has been a leading reference and textbook on the practice of surgery for several decades. The editors have continually updated this work to provide a contemporary treatment of the entire breadth and scope of surgery as a field. It is too lengthy and detailed for medical students who are not interested in entering a surgical field, but it is an investment worth consideringfor those individuals who are committed to or have already entered into the field of surgery.
