   Book Review

From Library Journal
Siegel's first book, Love , Medicine & Miracles , has headed the paperback best-seller lists since it came out in that format over a year ago. Yes, this latest book is rather haphazardly organized. Yes, it is somewhat repetitive and rambling. Yes, indeed, it needed far better editing. But the hope, spiritual guidance, and compassion it provides, both to people with life-threatening diseases and to their friends, relatives, and health-care providers, overwhelmingly transcend any stylistic imperfections. Highly recommended reading for just about everyone. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/189.- Marcia G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct.Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Larry LeShan, Ph.D., author of Cancer as a Turning Point
"Bernie Siegel [is] a doctor who loves. In this age of massive, impersonal medical technology, his advocacy of human caring is a necessity."

Norman Vincent Pearle
"I was enthralled with this book. Once into it, I could not stop reading until I had finished...It is a truly great book...[that] combines sound thought with captivating humor."

Norman Cousins
"The American people are beginning to think in new ways about health and illness....Bernie Siegel is helping to define and open up these new frontiers. In this sense he is in the best medical tradition."

Book Description
Originally published nearly ten years ago, Peace, Love & Healing offered the revolutionary message that we have an innate ability to heal ourselves. Now proven by numerous scientific studies, the connection between our minds and our bodies has been increasingly accepted as fact throughout the mainstream medical community. In a new introduction, Dr. Bernie Siegel highligths current research on the relationships among consciousness, psychosocial factors, attitude and immune function. "Love and peace of mind do protect us," Siegel writes. "They allow us to overcome the problems that life hands us. They teach us to survive...to live now...to have the courage to confront each day."

About the Author
Bernie S. Siegel, M.D., who prefers to be called Bernie, practiced general and pediatric surgery in New Haven, Connecticut, until he retired in 1989. In 1978, he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. He founded ECaP (Exceptional Cancer Patients) based on "carefrontation," a loving, safe, therapeutic confrontation that facilitates personal change, empowerment and healing. The resulting physical, spiritual and psychological benefits led Bernie's desire to make everyone aware of his or her healing potential. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable patients, Bernie embraces a philosophy that is at the forefront of a society grappling with medical ethics and spiritual issues. His books, Love, Medicine and Miracles published in 1986, Peace, Love and Healing in 1998, have broken new ground in the field of healing. Bernie's efforts have now turned toward humanizing medical care and medical education, and he continues to travel extensively with his wife, Bobbie, to speak and run workshops, sharing his techniques and experiences. Bernie and Bobbie have five children and five grandchildren (so far).
