FROM OUR EDITORS

Adorable toddlers with heartwarming expressions is the theme of this playful board book addition to Mary Engelbreit's Baby Booky series. In her signature pattern style of multicolored borders and wholesome characters, the author focuses on little cuties being mischievous, quiet, and funny. Joyful pages include a blond charmer throwing his food on the floor ("Sweet Pea"), a curly-haired "Snuggle Bug" holding his teddy bear, and a red-haired "Cutie Patootie" dolled up in a flowery outfit. Of course, "Lovey Dovey" is what these babies are all about, and a final ensemble spread has them all having fun together. With this cute-as-a-button read for your little tyke, there will certainly be plenty of love to go around!

Mary's dearest wish has always been to illustrate for children. Now, here is the first of a charming series of stories about Mary Engelbreit's irrepressible alter ego, Ann Estelle.

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

Illustrated in her homespun style, Mary Engelbreit's Lovey Dovey highlights babies and the pet names grownups give them, including "Sweet Pea," "Snuggle Bug" and "Cutie Patootie." There's a different baby on each page; the final spread shows the multicultural cast together. Also part of the Baby Booky series, Booky introduces cute creatures, "lamby" and "ducky" among them.

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo

Babies love to look at faces. Engelbreit has drawn a culturally diverse group of ten children in a variety of settings. She has captioned each with a sweet term of endearment for baby such as "Sweet Pea," "Silly Goose," "Little Chickadee" and "Cutie Patootie." All ten are seen together on the last page captioned "Lovey Dovey." The drawings are simple enough for a very young child to enjoy. The focus is on the child in the picture. Backdrops are soft solid colors that complement the focus. There is a narrow border of polka dots, stripes or gingham around each page. Parents can point to facial features and name them. They can also describe the activity or name the object pictured with the child. One of the "Baby Booky" series, this is a suitable first board book for very young children. 2003, Harper Festival/HarperCollins,
