Raising the flaps on each spread of this lift-up counting book reveals fanciful insects in increasing numbers, from "one tough bug" with barbells, to "seven space bugs" surrounded by stars and planets, to "ten saw bugs," whose snouts indeed consist of saws. Startlingly bright illustrations and elaborate paper engineering should attract young children's attention. However, the cleverness to the made-up insects varies widely; groups such as "three pretty bugs" and "nine very long-necked bugs" seem rather tame in contrast to the rest. Ages 3-6. Book Review
Little ghouls and boys will love looking behind each door in pop-up artist David A. Carter's Halloween Bugs. "Who’s behind the rusty iron door?" "Who’s behind the enchanted door?" Wouldn't you like to know? Aficionados of Carter’s other buggy books (The Twelve Bugs of Christmas, Easter Bugs, etc.) might have some inkling... six- and eight-legged critters will undoubtedly feature heavily. Behind creepy creaky (or whimsical) doors, readers will find bugs to rival the spookiest Halloween goblins and witches. Beware the "very hairy Scary Bug!" Don’t turn your back on the "one-eyed, one-horned, Spotted People Eater Bug." And think twice before accepting sweets from the "luscious little Lollipop Bug."

Carter's bug books specialize in the spectacular grand finale--he does not disappoint in Halloween Bugs,...

From School Library Journal
Libraries that collect board books will want to consider this engineering feat that combines shapes and colors to sometimes amazing effects. Each double-page spread presents a box and a question about its contents. Alliteration punches up the narrative while the pictures are eye-popping watercolor bugs with ink details and mechanical wonderments. Brown basketball bugs actually bounce, purple pickle bugs almost pinch readers' fingers, and a snazzy silver spitfire bug flies. All in all, the book is a lot of fun, but it's too delicate to circulate. --Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public LibraryCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Publishers Weekly
In sync with Valentine's Day's time-honored "hearts and flowers" motif, the creator of Jingle Bugs and Alpha Bugs fills this heart-shaped confection with sublimely silly Love Bugs, Rosebugs and similar species-all that's missing are lacy edges. And instead of the pull-tabs and flaps of Carter's earlier books, here all is intricately giddy, pop-up paper-engineering supporting a gaggle of multi-antennaed creatures (bug-eyed, of course) in appropriate reds and pinks. The opening spread, for example, swarms with fleecy clouds, against which is posed a bevy of pink-winged (and apparently unclothed) Cupid Bugs, "shooting arrows through the air." The Kissing Bug suitably leaves a trail of lipstick kisses, while the eponymous insect itself is puckered up and ready for action. Who could resist such amorous antics? Ages...

From Publishers Weekly
Where will they strike next? A jar of olives (medium, pitted, California), a waffle iron (silver, black-handled), a rock (plain, brown)-each conceals a daffy insect invention from the creator of How Many Bugs in a Box? and Jingle Bugs. In Carter's latest, familiar objects (umbrella, doughnut, hammer, etc.) are given (appropriately named) bug eyes and, often, antennae; they are wittily transformed into members of an odd but comical alphabet species. The subtitle doesn't quite do the book justice, since there as many pull-tabs and liftable flaps as true pop-ups (and a turning wheel, a tactile powder puff and even a scratchable "fancy fragrant Flower Bug")-but that minor cavil certainly won't prevent kids from having a grand time as they discover three particularly peppy specimens lurking in a "jar of jumping...

From Publishers Weekly
Carter (Alpha Bugs; Love Bugs) adds to his insect oeuvre with this collection of 12 textured specimens. The body of a "glittery bug" is made from a lame-like material; tightly pleated cloth forms the back of a "wrinkly bug"; heart-shaped "velvety bugs" display that plush fabric; etc. Though the tactile surfaces here provide interest (and even the occasional sound effect, as in the candy-wrapper-like paper for "crinkly bugs"), the book's simple format prevents Carter from showing the full range of his antic sensibilities. These bug-eyed beings seem less idiosyncratic than their counterparts in previous books, and the dynamism of paper engineering will be missed. All ages. Book Review
William Joyce's previous children's books, especially Dinosaur Bob and A Day With Wilbur Robinson, have delighted kid-kids and grown-up-kids alike with their strange, stylish illustrations and their slightly warped sensibility. In his latest book, The Leaf Men, things get even stranger, as the reader is plunged into the teeming mysterious world of an old woman's garden. When the old lady falls ill, and her garden falls into disorder, the mythical Leaf Men must be called upon to vanquish the evil Spider Queen and return things to order. Arachnid rights groups may quarrel with the choice of the spider as the villainess, but just about everyone else will marvel at Joyce's invention and his weird, detailed paintings. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
