The slaying of an elderly couple in a Wisconsin church draws Sheriff Michael Halloran and his amorous deputy, Sharon Mueller, into an investigation that brings unprecedented scrutiny to their conservative rural town. At the same time, a string of baffling murders in Minneapolis are driving homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth bonkers. Book Review
Don't take brilliant, shrewd Dairine Callahan for just any bratty younger sibling. Impatient for adventure, knowledge, and recognition, she finds her sister Nita's wizardry manual and reads the Oath aloud. Disappointingly, nothing happens. But when her family's new computer arrives, Dairene discovers more than the standard issue system software on it and launches herself on a reckless, universe-wide, high-voltage magical conflict with the Lone Power. Diane Duane's storytelling is skillfully mythic and wittily referential; Dairine's discovery and shaping of a new form of life is wondrous. From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-A short, easy-to-read biography of one of the world's richest men. The begin- ning chapter outlines Gates's childhood, and includes interesting anecdotes about early signs of competition and genius, while some people thought he was an underachiever. The book focuses on his many professional accomplishments as well as the issues and controversies that he faced throughout his career. Although he emerges as an influential person, Lesinski clearly explains the criticisms lobbed at Microsoft. She is objective about the controversies surrounding her subject, carefully presenting both sides. The book covers Gates's life up to January, 2000, and includes his philanthropic endeavors. Short enough to appeal to reluctant readers, it is dotted with black-and-white and full-color photos that add interest to the...

FAILURE TO CONNECT: How Computers Affect Our Children's Minds -- and What We Can Do About It
Author: Jane M. Healy Book Review
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0684855399
Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours

Book Review
This important book is a welcome addition to the growing (and long overdue) debate about how much of a good thing it is to mix computers and children.

Healy is a professional educator of wide experience, and a recovering techno-fundamentalist. She is scrupulously fair about the evidence presented in various studies on the ways computers help or hinder learning, and quick to offer positive anecdotes where there are positive ones to be had. (She freely notes, for example, what a miracle computers have been for some handicapped children.) But her conclusions about the routine use of computer technology in the classroom are overwhelmingly--and persuasively--negative.

A major theme of Failure to Connect is the federal government's culpable idiocy (not her term, but she implies as much) in jumping uncritically, to the tune...

Castle Explorer CD-ROM (mac/win)
Author: DK Publishing Book Review
Format: CD-ROM
ISBN: 0789408910
Availability: Usually ships within 1-2 business days

From Library Journal
Another learning adventure game on disc from DK, Castle Explorer takes you into (at times quite literally) a 3-D animated, 14th-century European castle. There are cross-sections galore, with pop-up windows explaining archaic terminology and videos of live actors. It's a combination of DK's The Way Things Work and (yet again) Myst, letting you explore the castle as a spy for the King and carry out an important mission. Along the way you'll assume a disguise, interact with other characters, and collect pieces of a vital map as well as coins (to bail you out when, inevitably, you end up being thrown in the dungeon). All of this is executed superbly and believably in typical DK fashion. Bottom Line: Combining great content and delivery of an imaginative premise, Castle Explorer is highly recommended for all personal...

The Kids' Guide to Digital Photography: How to Shoot, Save, Play With & Print Your Digital Photos

ISBN: 1579906435

From Booklist
Gr. 7-10. Young people with access to a digital camera will find answers to nearly all their questions in this wide-ranging, nicely designed guide. Beginning chapters address basics, including understanding camera features, using focus and flash functions, capturing motion, and so on. Bidner then delves into picture-editing software and even how to set up a Web site (with parent's permission, of course). Final sections offer ideas for projects, such as handmade stationery and bookplates. With so much material covered, some subjects are glossed over, particularly the explanations of software. But Bidner introduces sophisticated technical material in enthusiastic language that is kid-friendly without being condescending, and older teens who aren't put off by the book's juvenile appearance (models are mostly elementary- and...

Dr. Dobb's Electronic Review of Computer Books
Read the full review for this book. Like most collections, The Design of Children's Technology contains material that will fascinate some readers, but be paged through by others. I was most interested in the descriptions of methodologies and pitfalls in the first half; a lot of the points made seem obvious once they have been stated, but would probably not occur to someone who hadn't tripped over them before. The descriptive material in the second half was less satisfying for me, as the projects discussed have moved on since the book was written, and more up-to-date material is available through the Web. However, these chapters were still useful as an overview of who's doing what, and why. Dr. Dobb's Electronic Review of Computer Books
