Book Review
In all Mildred D. Taylor's unforgettable novels she recounts "not only the joy of growing up in a large and supportive family, but my own feelings of being faced with segregation and bigotry." Her Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry tells the story of one African American family, fighting to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s. Nine-year-old Cassie Logan, growing up protected by her loving family, has never had reason to suspect that any white person could consider her inferior or wish her harm. But during the course of one devastating year when her community begins to be ripped apart by angry night riders threatening African Americans, she and her three brothers come to understand why the land they own means so...

Grade 5-8–Houghton presents readers with an understanding of Taylor's work as based on family stories and the history of African Americans in the United States. The result is a blend of history with the author's life and literature. McGinty explains that Paterson's experiences growing up as the daughter of missionaries shaped her commitment to reflect the realistic feelings of children in her literature. Sommers describes Crutcher as an author who writes from his experience as a teacher, therapist, and writer. All three biographers show that their subjects have a deep respect for their readers and write stories that value truth and honesty. Selections of book reviews of their work are included. Each book contains an interview with the featured author along with well-documented citations,...

Book Review's Best of 2001
The Land is Mildred D. Taylor's wonderful prequel to her Newbery Medal winner, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. In the stories Taylor has to tell, life is not fair, hard work doesn't always pay off, and the good guy doesn't always win. That's because this extraordinary author tells the stories of her African American family in the Deep South during and after the Civil War, a time of ugly, painful racism.

Paul-Edward Logan, the son of a white, plantation-owner father and a slave mother, is our narrator, bound and determined to buy his own land and shape his own future at whatever cost. Caught between black and white worlds and not fitting into either one is devastating for him, but his powerful, engaging tales of the love of family, the strength of friendship, and growing up will inspire anyone to...

Book Review
It's hot and humid in 1933 Mississippi, when an elderly black man and a white store owner test their friendship against a backdrop of racism and peer pressure. An explosive confrontation takes place when the black man, Tom Bee, greets the clerk, John Wallace, by his first name--an intimacy unheard of at the time. A group of witnesses heckles Wallace for what they perceive as his permissiveness, and in spite of his private promise to Bee to allow him to greet him this way, Wallace betrays Bee, shooting him in the leg. This brief but poignant story won the 1988 Coretta Scott King Award. It provides strong characterization as well as food for discussion on racism and human relations. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Grade 5-10-- Drawing once again upon her father's stories, Taylor has created a harsh, disturbing tale of racism in Mississippi during the 1930s. Told from the viewpoint of Jeremy Simms, a ten-year-old white boy who aspires to be friends with the black children of the Logan family, this is the story of a rainy day, an overloaded bus, and the destiny of its passengers after the driver has ordered the black travelers off to make room for latecoming whites. Telescoping the injustices faced by blacks on a daily basis...

Part of Twayne's United States Authors series, this is a fine, readable introduction to Taylor's life and work. Crowe, a professor of English, shows how much of Taylor's fiction is rooted in her extended family's storytelling tradition and in her personal experience growing up with racism and violence, sustained by her family's loving support and pride. He discusses her books in their historical context, including her Newbery award winner, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (1976), and provides a background chapter on the civil rights movement in Mississippi. In his final chapter, he answers those who criticize her books for their painful representation of racism and shows that she maintains a balance between realism and hope. Illustrated with many black-and-white family photos, this will interest YAs and teachers who...
