From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-This simple text, accompanied by Tafuri's delicate watercolor inks and colored-pencil drawings, features six baby animals in a variety of habitats asking their parents the same question: "How am I special?" The adults describe the youngsters' unique qualities and assure them of their love. The lions, prairie dogs, penguins, beavers, meadowlarks, foxes, and humans are drawn first in their natural surroundings and shown on the next spread in close-up. Each family consists of two parents and one child. This book is a tender read-aloud, with a nice rhythm to the repeated phrase, "-we will love you forever and ever and always." The illustrations include other creatures to look for in the background. A list of all the animals is included on the copyright page. (However, king penguins and arctic terns...

From Publishers Weekly
In this tender bedtime book, seven young creatures ask in turn a single, important question: "Do you love me, Mama?" The answer in each case is the same: "forever and ever and always," but it is preceded by different, lyrical similes. Mama Rabbit loves her baby "as the earth loves you, warm and snug around you, giving you a warm place to sleep"; Mama Mouse loves her child "as the wild rye loves you, gently swaying above you, giving you food and cover from harm." As the characters speak, the pictures quietly show the progression of the sun and moon to indicate the passage of time from midmorning to evening. The book's oversized pages seem to enfold the reader like a hug, and the full-bleed watercolor-and-ink illustrations are sumptuously yet tidily rendered, bringing to life the lushness of the woodland setting...

PreS–Fans of Tafuri's Have You Seen My Duckling? (HarperCollins, 1984) will welcome this companion story. As the light begins to fade over the pond, Mama Duck announces to her eight ducklings that it is time for bed. She and seven of her charges start toward home but one straggler is distracted by the other animals that bid him good night. He soon discovers that he is the only duckling left on the pond. A turtle who has been watching the scene unfold comes to his rescue and safely carries him home. Sharp-eyed youngsters will spot the turtle on each page and will be reassured to see that Mama Duck is never entirely out of sight. The finely detailed, realistic illustrations are rich in color and depth; the spread showing the diminutive duck seemingly all alone on the very large pond is particularly...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1–As day breaks, five newly hatched and hungry chicks run around the farmyard looking for something to eat. Each one finds a possible meal–a worm, a ladybug, a strawberry, a butterfly, a trout–but none is just right until wise Mama Hen leads her hatchlings to the corn patch where they learn to scratch, scratch, scratch, scratch, scratch. Told rhythmically and partially in rhyme, this simple story ends with the babes cuddling up near their mama as the moon comes up. Done in brush pen, watercolor pencils, and ink, Tafuris endearing illustrations sweep across the pages, presenting an intensely close-up view of the chicks and the action. Though the tale is slight, the youngest listeners will delight in the art featuring almost life-size fowl, and beginning readers will find the...

PreS–In simple rhyming text, Denslow tells of a child who puts seeds out for woodland animals on a snowy winters day. In turn, the chickadee, sparrow, cardinal, crow, squirrels, bunnies, mouse, and opossum come to partake of the treat. The story is slight, but the friendly looking animals that come to visit will charm young children and beginning readers. The setting is a snowy woods thats just right for winter themes; the animals fill the spreads and are perfect for storytimes. The which animal will come next aspect of the story provides opportunities for dialogic reading. Teachers will be tempted to use this book in curriculum units, but the artistic license used in creating the animals tracks keep it from being an early science book. Still, its a satisfactory choice for group or one-on-one...

Mama's Little Bears

From Publishers Weekly
Tafuri's (I Love You, Little One) skilled watercolor-and-pastel drawings feature a trio of toddler bears who run off from their mother to explore the wide world. At each turn of the page, the brief text directs readers' attention to the innocent wonders the cubs discover: "What's under here?" three green lizards hiding under a rock. "What's down there?" a gray mouse family peering up from a hollow log. Unfortunately, the preschool lesson on prepositions grows needlessly complicated at the climax of the story. "What's up there?" the text asks as the bears stand at the base of a tree. To find the answer, young readers must turn the book sideways and right-side-up several times. Finally, when the owl at the top of the tree startles the inquisitive cubs, they shout for their "Mama!," who provides a gently reassuring,...

Little Goose needs to make a nest. But whenever she settles into a place on the farm that's "nice and soft" or "nice and quiet," it turns out to be another animal's domain--a blanket-lined crate belongs to the cat family, a bin of straw is the sheep's fodder--and she is rousted to a refrain of "Silly Little Goose!" Luckily, the farmer's hat (which blows through several spreads) lands in a "perfect" grassy nook, and soon the new mother's eight eggs are emitting eight tiny sounds. This handsome book exudes a lovely nostalgic sensibility, including the elegant typography. Tafuri's (Have You Seen My Duckling?) animal characterizations occasionally miss the mark (the pigs look a little blobby, the cats feel unfinished), but her plump, feathered heroine is just right--a determined bird who retains her sweet comic...
