From Publishers Weekly
Newbery winner Rylant, who debuted as an illustrator with her Everyday board books (1993), offers paintings and text in tribute to "Dog Heaven." Here there are fields to run in, soft beds (made of clouds turned inside out) and "angel children," because "God knows that dogs love children more than anything else in the world." Rylant's childlike acrylic paintings-similar though less practiced than the work of Lucy Cousins-are filled with checkerboard steps, yellow daisies and pink stars. Whether she is aiming for whimsy, albeit self-consciously, or striving to present a genuinely comforting view of heaven is not entirely clear. God, for example, stands like an organ grinder at a biscuit machine, wearing a purple hat and sporting a white mustache. "God has a sense of humor," Rylant tells us, "so He makes His...

Henry and Mudge in the Green Time: The Third Book of Their Adventures

From Publishers Weekly
In this third book of the series (Henry and Mudge and Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble), Rylant's portrayal of the small Henry and his affectionate large dog is even better than before. When Henry and Mudge go on a picnic and Henry is stung by a bee, Mudge licks away his salty tears. When Henry gives Mudge a bath, he ends up having to dry both of them with a towel. And when Henry and Mudge play King of the Mountain, they pretend that Mudge is a dragon, and together chase away all pretenders to the throne. Late on summer days, when purple shadows mime their play, Henry and Mudge curl up under their magic tree and sleep "together, on the green hill in their green time." Stevenson's pen-and-ink and watercolors sensitively embellish deftly-told stories about loyalty, love and innocence. Ages 6-8. Copyright 1987 Reed...

Book Review
This wonderful book revolves around a few delightfully named characters: Summer, Uncle Ob, Aunt May and Cletus Underwood. After being passed among relatives, Summer joins her aunt and uncle and marvels at the couple's deep love for one another. But after Aunt May dies, Summer and Uncle Ob are brought together in their struggles to come to terms with the death. Cletus, a neighbor boy, comes along to help provide an answer. This simple and sweet story, which won the Newbery Medal in 1993, is injected with just the right touches of humor and mysticism. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This short novel is a study of grief--chiefly, that felt by Summer after her foster mother's sudden death, but also her sorrow at witnessing the grief of Ob,...
Cat Heaven

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2. Cat Heaven sounds like paradise. A rhyming text describes a realm in which felines are fed from God's countertop, a place where they no longer get stuck in trees because now they can fly. There are thousands of toys, and soft angel laps in which to cuddle. There is even a quiet time to look back on former homes and loving people. The primitive, childlike painting style is similar to Rylant's work in Dog Heaven (Scholastic, 1995). Both books serve the same purpose of comforting anyone mourning a lost pet, but the writing flows more easily and the pictures are more mature in Cat Heaven. The story has spiritualism and reverence but not in a traditional manner. God is depicted as a kindly older man who washes the cats' bowls and "walks in His garden with a good black book and a kitty asleep...

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with LILLY'S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE, PICKLES FROM PITTSBURGH, CHATO'S KITCHEN, and PETE'S A PIZZA.]--Special relationships between characters are the stuff of engaging stories. Each character becomes a vivid part of the listener's imagination. In THE RELATIVES CAME, the annual summer trip is fondly remembered. Similar car trips, greetings, spreads of food and conversation, and bulging houses will spring to mind. The relaxed pace of this...
The Great Gracie Chase

Book Review
Poor Gracie. All this little pooch wanted was a quiet house, with "the kitty sleeping on the windowsill, the big dog sleeping on the couch, the quiet fish going ploop-ploop." But then one day the painters came. In a "big, noisy truck," with "clangy ladders and big-person voices." Clearly, there was only one solution: "She barked and barked and told them to go outside. But do you know what? Gracie was put outside!"

And so begins the Great Gracie Chase, as this otherwise obedient little pup goes from miffed to mischievous, leading everyone from the paperboy to the delivery woman to the painters themselves on a town-wide caper, in search of the one thing she wants most--a little peace and quiet.

As a proven master of the cute but not cloying, Cynthia Rylant (author and illustrator of Dog Heaven and Cat Heaven)...

Kindergarten-Grade 1-Aided by Henry's father, this terrific twosome enters a snowman-building contest at the local park. The entries are many and clever-from snowdogs and snowpeople to snow aliens. Henry's entry, however, stumps the judges-until he explains that the green-paint-spattered figure represents his father when he's painting a chair, and he wins third place for the most original creation. With a giant box of snowman cookies as their prize, the victorious albeit messy trio returns home to indulge in an equally wonderful cookie mess. Full of this series' usual good-natured humor, this easy read-aloud will warm the hearts of emerging readers. The watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations lend a gentle and simple touch to this lovely adventure. Selene S. Vasquez, Orange Brook Elementary School,...

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-The Lighthouse family consists of Pandora, the cat; Seabold, the dog; and their adopted mice children, Whistler, Lila, and baby Tiny. In this adventure, Whistler and Lila help to reunite a baby beluga whale with his mother. While the characterizations are first rate and the sense of family harmony is stressed, the story is a bit thin and some of the dialogue seems strained. To help the tiny mice with the rescue, Rylant introduces Huck, the cormorant-"a soggy old bird" with a bad attitude. McDaniels's wonderful black-and-white graphite drawings capture the personalities of each of the animals. The layout and drawings are old-fashioned without being fussy and add needed drama to a somewhat simplistic story.Barbara Buckley, Rockville Centre Public Library, NYCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information,...
Old Woman Who Named Things

From Publishers Weekly
The unlikely protagonist of this quirky and tenderhearted story is a little old lady with cat glasses and a beehive who might have stepped out of The Far Side. Lonely, she names inanimate objects-her car is Betsy, her bed is Roxanne. A stray dog wanders into her life but she refuses to name it; after losing many friends "she named only those things she knew she could never outlive." When the dog disappears, however, she realizes that finding him-and subsequently naming him-is worth the risk of outliving him. Brown's (Boris) hilarious, disproportionate depictions of the cowboy-booted woman and her belongings give this tale much of its bounce. Betsy the car has grinning grillwork and huge fins; Fred the chair has buttons for eyes and a rearing, pompadour-like back cushion. This sweet and silly story has solid kid...

From Publishers Weekly
A number of familiar characters return in beginning reader sequels. In Mr. Putter and Tabby Catch the Cold by Cynthia Rylant, illus. by Arthur Howard, Mr. Putter is miserable: "Colds aren't so much fun when you're old." Luckily, Mrs. Teaberry makes it better with chicken soup, tea with honey and a little help from her bulldog, Zeke. Ages 6-9.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Another sweet story about Mr. Putter and his cat. In this title, he goes outside into the snow without his hat and pays the price. He laments that it's no fun getting a cold now that he's an old man. As a boy, he almost enjoyed it because his mother would ply him with hot soup, mint tea, and adventure books. When his neighbor finds out he's...

PreSchool-K–This picture book serves as a reassuring reminder that good things are always around the corner. In gentle rhyme, Rylant greets a new year and celebrates the constants of life, including new beginnings, togetherness, and the cyclical wonders of the natural world: the sky will still be there/the stars will still shine/birds will fly over us/church bells will chime. Beeke's soft and soothing watercolor scenes are as comforting as the text; each spread reveals a setting of gentle color–a pink-petaled field, a sunny kitchen, or a cobalt-blue night sky. The human characters are simply drawn and yet joyfully expressive. The book's subject matter and tone make it a wonderful bedtime selection for toddlers and preschoolers, especially when read after a tough day. The optimistic viewpoint and...
