Nearly a hundred years after its original publication, The Railway Children is still one of E. Nesbit's most beloved and delightful stories. There, the children begin a series of exciting adventures, from saving a train filled with passengers from a landslide, to rescuing a baby from a fire, to aiding a penniless Russian exile, to eventually unraveling the mystery of their father's disappearance. Featuring a new jacket illustration by Caldecott medalist Paul O. Zelinsky, as well as all nineteen...

Grade 3-7-This is a delightful reading of a classic story by Edith Nesbit, first published in 1906. When father is suddenly taken away, mother and the three children must leave their fancy London life to live in a simple country cottage near a train station. The children and their bottomless good nature, together with some new friends, work to rescue father and help others along the way. Narrator Virginia Leishman makes this old-fashioned world come alive for today's children without resorting to melodrama. The recording is flawless and without unnecessary fanfare, making it a wonderful way to introduce a classic to young listeners.Nancy A. After two years in the slammer for creating a computer virus and unwittingly turning it loose on the free world, computer genius Avery Nesbitt has turned into an agoraphobic recluse in this spirited tale of romantic suspense from Bevarly (Indecent Suggestion). Even worse, Avery's online addiction has made her a prime target for Sorcerer, an Internet predator and international high-tech criminal. OPUS (Office for Political Unity and Security) agent Dixon is hot on Sorcerer's trail and convinces Avery to help lure him out. The pair, along with Dixon's rookie partner, Tanner, and their surveillance equipment, withdraw to the Nesbitt family's Hamptons estate. Book Review
A plot summary makes this story sound ordinary by children's literature standards: the summer adventures of four children who discover an enchanted castle and a magic ring. But Edith Nesbit's adored classic (written in 1907) is so much more than the description suggests. Right from the start, the author plays with the idea of magic, teasing us with a sleeping princess who turns out to be a fake. Elsewhere, the magic is "real" as can be--in fact, though written nearly 100 years ago, The Enchanted Castle prefigures the magical realism of modern novels in the matter-of-fact way it weaves the uncanny into the children's everyday life. And, while few authors are confident enough to parody bad writing, Nesbit does it hilariously (and ever so gently) through one character's tendency to "talk like a book": "'To brush his hair and...

Book Description
Jack's turn of fortune signals an exciting new direction for Matt Tavares, whose stunning full-color artwork enlivens this classic gift edition.

Jack can't seem to do anything useful for his poor mother. He can't even conduct an errand as simple as selling the cow; instead, he trades the beast for a handful of beans. But then, amazingly, those very beans sprout into a towering stalk, elevating Jack to a strange land ruled by a greedy giant. Jack must be clever and brave as he tries to return the giant's stolen treasures to their rightful owner. E. Nesbit's charming, wry retelling of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK was first published in 1908. Preserving the author's unabridged text, this gorgeously designed edition features the dynamic artwork and dramatic perspectives of Matt Tavares, realized in full-color...
