Book Review
Elizabeth, a beautiful princess, lives in a castle and wears fancy clothes. Just when she is about to marry Prince Ronald, a dragon smashes her castle, burns her clothes with his fiery breath, and prince-naps her dear Ronald. Undaunted and presumably unclad, she dons a large paper bag and sets off to find the dragon and her cherished prince. Once she's tracked down the rascally reptile, she flatters him into performing all sorts of dragonly stunts that eventually exhaust him, allowing her to rescue Prince Ronald. But what does Prince Not-So-Charming say when he sees her? "You smell like ashes, your hair is all tangled and you are wearing a dirty old paper bag. Come back when you are dressed like a real princess." (At least he has the courtesy not to mention that the princess's crown resembles a dying sea...

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-"Ugly, ugly, very ugly," decrees the class when Stephanie arrives in school with a ponytail. But the next day, all the girls have ponytails, too. Dismayed and disgusted by these copycats, Stephanie has her Mom move her ponytail to one side with the same results. After wearing it top and front as well, Stephanie confronts the class with her final act of defiance-she announces that she's going to shave her head! Next day, her teacher and classmates are bald as billiard balls and Stephanie? Why, she's chased from the classroom with her very ordinary ponytail flying out behind her. Munsch lampoons the slavish conformity of kids while applauding Stephanie's courage and audacity in this thinly disguised paean to individualism. The cumulative text and progressively more unusual hairstyles will appeal to...

reS-Gr 3-In this zany story, Anna likes to climb on the refrigerator and her dresser and go "up, up, up" even though she falls down "ow ouch!" When her parents protest, she goes outside, where it's okay to climb, and climbs the highest tree she can find. Sitting in the top, she goads her parents to come after her; when they fall down trying, she relents and climbs down to wrap them in "enormous Band-Aids" and repeats what they've been telling her: "Be CAREFUL-don't CLIMB!" The humor is in the timing, the changing size and placement of the text, and the silliness of the plot. The watercolor illustrations are also over-the-top with ridiculously exaggerated points of view, comical-looking characters, and little jokes, such as a tiny treetop animal watching TV or stars flying off Daddy's injured bottom. This is...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2. Kristen's baby brother is born at a zoo instead of a hospital. Her overwrought parents repeatedly bring home the wrong infant?first an alligator, then a seal, then a monkey. Finally, brave Kristen takes off on her bike and locates the misplaced "people baby." Thanks to the brave, smart big sister, the babies get sorted out, "And everything was okay...until Kristen's mother had twins." Storytime audiences will cackle as Kristen examines each baby, pointing out the animal parts (claws, flippers, tails, etc.) that convince her none of these creatures is her new brother. The silliness escalates in the ebullient watercolor illustrations. Kristen's mother tosses hair curlers out the car window on the first trip to the zoo, leaving her hair to twist wildly for the rest of the story. The animal...

Julie has saved up lots of money--$100! Depsite her mother's concerns, Julie spends it all on cosmetics, including plenty of lipstick, eyeshadow, and perfume. From Publishers Weekly
This slim, paper-over-board volume by the creators of The Paper Bag Princess and Alligator Baby gives some loose-tooth cliches a slapstick spin. When Andrew's wobbly, hurting tooth prevents him from eating an apple, his mother yanks at it futilely with both hands. His father then puts his foot on the boy's nose and attempts to pull it with pliers. However, this effort is no more successful than the dentist's endeavor to tie one end of a rope to the tooth and the other to his car (which falls apart when he drives away), or the tooth fairy's attempted extraction with a hammer. A vigorous sneeze (brought on by his best friend's idea that Andrew inhale pepper) finally does the trick, sending the tooth flying through the air, "all the way across town." Martchenko's watercolor cartoons embellish the tale's hyperbole...
I Have To Go!

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K Andrew's mother and father are careful to ask him beforehand, ``Andrew, do you have to go pee?'' Andrew always answers, ``No, no, no.'' Any parent can guess the rest. As soon as he's firmly belted in the car or immobilized in a snowsuit , Andrew bellows ``I have to go!'' His family is annoyed, but kind, about the inconvenience, and Andrew surprises everyone by getting up at night to go to the bathroom with grandpa and not wetting his bed again that evening. The cartoon characters are expressive and nice. A potty-trained child from three to five will enjoy the humor in this preschool vignette, but like a family photo album, this subject has limited appeal. This is an attractive, well-designed, sturdy package, but an ever-so-additional choice. Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Public Library,...

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Strong-willed and quick-thinking Lauretta insists on the fastest, most souped-up wheelchair available. While her mother tries to persuade her to choose something a little more sensible, the girl prevails and she gets a 92-speed, dirt-bike model. Her love of speed gets her into some trouble with the police, but in the end, after her brother cuts his finger, she saves the day by whisking him off to the hospital. The watercolor, cartoon artwork conveys Lauretta's adventures and enhances the text. An amusing story with a positive message about young people with disabilities.G. PreSchool-Grade 2-Samuel wakes up famished, as Martchenko humorously demonstrates in a colorful, cartoonlike illustration that shows the child's pillow, magazine, and teddy bear with big bites taken out of them. Although his indulgent mom seems willing to feed his enormous appetite, after three bowls of cereal, four milk shakes, four stacks of pancakes, and a fried chicken, she is fed up. Frustrated and "starving," the child jumps on his brother's suggestion that he enter a local pie-eating contest. Of course, he is victorious. Returning home with his prize, he is dismayed to find that his mother has baked him pies for lunch. Munsch's fast-moving plot and deadpan delivery combine with Martchenko's bright hues and outrageous exaggeration to create a typically zany whole. Fans of this author/illustrator team...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 Thomas refuses to wear his new brown snowsuit: "If you think I am going to wear that ugly snowsuit you are crazy!" He reinforces this statement with a resounding "NNNNNO" when his mother insists he don the suit. His mother jumps up and down, and they have an enormous fight. This behavior is repeated with Thomas' teacher and the school principal. In the process of a fight, Thomas and his teacher end up in their underwear. Thomas never suffers any ill-consequences for his rude behavior; he looks on with a smirk as his mother, teacher and principal are made to look foolish. In the end the principal retires to Arizona "where nobody ever wears a snowsuit." Thomas comes off as a manipulating, rude little brat. Audiences may chuckle over the cartoon-like illustrations; they are bright and...
