Grade 7-10-Birgit Neilsen, gorgeous and popular, is tired of the long-standing status quo at Grandview High School. She organizes a group of like-minded students to combat the bullying and terrorism that exists, but their good intentions soon result in tragedy and the death of a fellow student. This book is obviously intended for reluctant readers. Engaging dialogue, an absorbing plot, and well-defined characters are all sacrificed to short, choppy sentences; stilted dialogue; and a message that has all of the subtlety of a hammer blow to the head. An incredibly monotonous book.Robert Gray, East Central Regional Library, Cambridge, MNCopyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This eerie time-travel tale revolves around the excavation of a mass grave in Liverpool, England. Thirteen-year-old narrator Tom, a mistreated foster child, investigates an abandoned construction site and falls into a hole lined with decaying coffins and scattered bones. From here, he is magically transported to 1847 Ireland just in time to save the life of Tully Monaghan, an impoverished boy who could pass for Tom's identical twin. Imaginations will spin as readers speculate about the purpose of Tom's mission and his connection to a lookalike. Tom shuffles between past and present, helping the Monaghans survive the potato blight and returning to present-day slow-witted Brian, a foster brother in need of his help. Heneghan (Wish Me Luck; Torn Away) skillfully conveys a tug-of-war between Tom's allegiances and...

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10-When 10th-grader Mike loses his family and both legs in an automobile accident, he is predictably withdrawn and highly resistant to those intent on helping him. Just as total academic and social detachment seem inevitable, the yearbook committee at his Vancouver high school offers Mike a job assembling a 50th anniversary feature. He accepts, but only because the assignment will free him from attending the soporific history class taught by the dreaded Mr. Dorfman. The plot takes a supernatural turn when an eighth-grade yearbook assistant, Sarah, turns up. Her persistent peppiness gradually defrosts Mike, and young love seems destined to run its course until he reports to his post one day to find Sarah bloodied and weeping in a corner. When she runs out, Mike notifies school officials who inform him...

Book Review
It's a good thing that 11-year-old Andy Flynn has the Sheehogue, or Fairy people, looking out for him, or he'd be up a creek--literally! When Mosquito Creek floods suddenly after weeks of unrelenting rain, Andy, his family, and their entire house get swept away into the raging river. Due to a group of watchful Sheehogue who push him to safety, Andy survives. His mother and stepfather are not so lucky. Depressed and defeated, Andy is forced to leave Vancouver and move in with his grim-faced Aunt Mona in Halifax. There, he makes the happy discovery that his real father lives nearby. Heartened, Andy runs away from Mona to live with his dad. At first, Vincent Flynn seems thrilled. But he just can't seem to remember to buy enough food to feed a growing boy, and his gambling and drinking have police and thugs alike...

After his mother and younger sister are killed in a terrorist bombing in their native Belfast, Declan joins the Holy Terrors, a youth gang modeled after the IRA. When the authorities catch up with him, Declan is sent--very much against his will--to a small town in British Columbia, to live with his father's brother Matthew and his family. Angry, embittered and determined to return to Ireland as soon as possible, Declan has little affection for his gentle uncle, whom he considers a "meddling, do-good fixer" and a cowardly runaway. He himself undertakes several daring escapes. Gradually, however, the tranquility of his new home leads Declan to reexamine his notions of courage and heroism. Flashbacks give a bitter taste of the violence that forms a part of everyday life in Belfast and of Declan's impassioned fury....
