Book Review
If you ever feel like falling into a beautiful comic-book story--in the same way one falls back into a warm field of grass--reach for Michel Plessix's lush adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows. The artwork is an aquarelle, with thin, precise, detailed lines. It's no wonder he received numerous awards for his previous effort, Julien Boisvert, a contemporary take on the Tintin character type. In Wind in the Willows, Plessix breathes life into Mole, Rat, and Toad (of Toad Hall) as they picnic on the riverbank, indulge in Toad's latest fad, and get lost in Wild Wood. The pacing is masterful: each panel lingers just long enough to make you appreciate the simple pleasures of life. From Publishers Weekly
Rock music promoter Graham and Greenfield ( STP: A Journey Through America with the Rolling Stones ) were collaborating on this unfailingly entertaining portrait when Graham died in a helicopter crash in 1991. The book's chronological but unusual format--it consists almost entirely of freestanding quotes, without transitional narration--works well. Sources include Graham's family, members of the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and actor Peter Coyote; Graham, shrewd and outspoken, tells anecdotes of his own and never misses a chance to rebut his illustrious colleagues who reminisce here. His tale is the stuff of legends: a Jew born in Germany in 1931 and orphaned soon after, he was evacuated to France in 1939 and sent to the U.S. in 1941. He lived with a foster family in the Bronx, working as a waiter...

Book Description
When Kenneth Grahame first entertained his son with letters about a petulant character named Toad, he had no way of knowing that his creation—together with his friends Mole, Rat, and Badger—would delight children for nearly 100 years. Here they are once more, pursuing adventure in gypsy caravans, stolen sportscars, and prison, but always returning to their beloved Wildwood. And although Grahame’s characters are unmistakably animals, they remain endearingly human in their eccentricity, folly, and friendship.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 1-5–Grahame's classic tale of loyalty and compassion, which first appeared in Dream Daysin 1898, tells of a shepherd who discovers a sleeping dragon in a cave on the Downs. His son knows from his reading of fairy tales and natural history that some dragons are reasonable and nonthreatening. The child approaches the creature and finds it to be gentle. The villagers, believing it to be a menace, send for St. George, but after the boy persuades the knight to meet his new friend, the three are able to devise a plan that gives everyone a fine show and allows the dragon to stay, writing...

Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. Previously published in two volumes, The River Bank (1996) and The Adventures of Mr. Toad (1998), Moore's intelligently abridged edition of Grahame's classic is now available in a single large-format volume. The relatively large print, the wide margins, and the beautiful ink-and-pastel artwork on nearly every page make this version a good choice for middle-grade independent readers put off by the original or for parents in search of a pleasing edition to read aloud to younger children. Book Description
The Wind in the Willows is a book for those "who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides." So wrote Kenneth Grahame of his timeless tale of Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad, in their lyrical world of gurgling rivers and whispering reeds, a world which is both beautiful and benevolently ordered. But it is also a world threatened by dark forces—"the Terror of the Wild Wood" with its "wicked little faces" and "glances of malice and hatred"—and defended by the mysterious Piper at the Gates of Dawn. In the end, Grahame triumphantly succeeds in conveying his most precious theme: the miracle of loyalty and friendship.
