Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A simple introduction to how plants reproduce, discussing pollination, seed dispersal, and growth from seed to plant. The section on pollination, covered in detail in the illustrations, is very clear. A simple project--how to grow a bean plant--is included. A final page gives odd and unusual facts. Unfortunately, the text is pedestrian and occasionally awkward. The boldly colored illustrations are casual, somewhat careless, and some plants are hard to recognize. Other books cover the same subject with more excitement in language and zest in visual design. Bean and Plant (Silver Burdett, 1986) by Back, Reason for a Flower (Putnam, 1983) by Heller, or Lauber's Seeds: Pop, Stick, Glide (Crown, 1981) are better titles. --Sharon Levin, University of Vermont, BurlingtonCopyright 1991 Reed...

A readable, involving text, paired with attractive watercolor illustrations focuses on the history and fate of Nuestra Senora de Antocha. The Antocha is a 17th century Spanish galleon that sank during a hurricane off the coast of Florida. The book details the history of the wreck and the many attempts to salvage her, culminating in the successful 1985 operation that netted one of the most lucrative treasures ever found. The Antocha is only the alluring frame for the story: along the way, readers also discover a tremendous amount of information about sunken treasure, salvage operations, the history of diving, the restoration and preservation of wrecks, and much more. Gibbons also briefly details other famous treasure hunts: the Mary Rose , the Vasa , the Whydah and, finally, the Titanic. For its engrossing subject...

PreSchool-Grade 2–This cornucopia of all things Thanksgiving has abundant enough information for young readers without overwhelming them. Placing the holiday in the context of harvest festivals throughout time, Gibbons tells the story of the Pilgrims, their Native American friends, and the first Thanksgiving with minimal text and colorful illustrations that supply further details. Much of the book is devoted to contemporary celebrations with scenes showing activities that will be familiar to many children. Each of these snapshots begins "Thanksgiving is…" and lap readers and storytime participants will quickly supply the simple responses.–Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The Quilting Bee

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-In this look at a quilting bee, the warm and friendly atmosphere of this social gathering quickly gets lost in a blur of patterns and text. Dozens of watercolor-and-ink illustrations depicting both scenes of people quilting and pattern squares are scattered about like a crazy quilt. Interesting facts about the design, construction, and history of quilts, as well as the origin of traditional patterns used by the pioneers, are ill served by the book's format and fonts, which make it difficult to distinguish the narrative from the numerous captions. On a more positive note, the author offers a wonderful idea for making an authors' and illustrators' quilt. For an informative, better-organized alternative, try Mary Cobb's The Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days (Millbrook, 1995).Teri Markson, Stephen S....

Kindergarten-Grade 3–With her usual flair for simplifying complex topics, Gibbons makes ancient Egyptian civilization accessible to young readers. She offers ample material for children exploring mummies, pyramids, and pharaohs for the first time. Much information is communicated through the watercolor illustrations and accompanying captions. The text is limited to a few short sentences at the bottom of each page, a feature that earmarks this title for independent reading. To explain the Egyptians' belief in an afterlife, Gibbons shows a man standing next to the outline of his own body. Inside the outline is a bright yellow star, depicting the man's soul. Easy definitions of Ka and Ba are provided, and the process of mummification is presented in a sequential, straightforward manner. The last page is...

Grade 1-4-A colorful, informative look at tropical rain forests. Gibbons has drawn and labeled about 50 animals and numerous plants and trees on double-spread illustrations. Complementary text appears in the margins. Each spread is bordered by vines and flowers reminiscent of medieval manuscripts. The striking watercolors evoke the mood of the forests, while the text contains simple definitions for italicized scientific terms. Readers are drawn into the ecology of rain forests before mention is made of the danger of global warming and the extinction of flora and fauna due to humanity's destructive invasion. Methods for protecting the areas, such as creating selective cutting or extractive reserves, are noted. Grade 1-3-- Gibbons' easily identifiable artistic style works well with her explanations of sometimes misunderstood weather-related terms. Drawings are appealing, attractively arranged, and closely matched to the textual information. Temperature, air pressure, moisture, and wind are broadly defined and illustrated. Each of the four areas is then broken down further: moisture is illustrated as rain, drizzle, hail, snow, etc. The term describing each type of weather phenomenon is highly visible in large type and is contained in a dialogue balloon that stands out from the accompanying illustration. One page of curious weather facts concludes the book. An attractive introduction for weather units in the primary grades, along with Gibbon's Weather Forecasting (Four Winds, 1987). --Carolyn S. Grade 1-3-- Scientists observe a puffin colony as the colorful birds return to spring nesting sites on an isolated island in Maine. The direct and simple writing style points out the uniqueness of these seabirds: their bright beaks during breeding season; the burrows that serve as nests for single eggs; the annual return to their birthplaces to hatch new chicks. Also included is basic information about the common puffin and the part National Audubon Society scientists have played since 1969 in its survival. Bright, full-page watercolors of the colony reflect island topography and surrounding seascapes. Smaller illustrations capture the birds' expressive profiles as though recorded in close-up snapshots. An appealing book that presents the role of naturalists, and one that works as a companion to Gibbons's...

Kindergarten-Grade 2-A basic introduction to the holiday-how it began, the life and works of St. Patrick, and the various ways in which the day is celebrated. The text is clear and concise, and the pages are full of information. Gibbons's simple, clean, full-page watercolor-and-ink illustrations flow logically from one to the next. Particularly welcome are descriptions of some St. Patrick's Day symbols, such as shamrocks, leprechauns, and Celtic harps. A couple of picture books are available on the subject, such as Alice Schertle's Jeremy Bean's St. Patrick's Day (Lothrop, 1987), but this is an outstanding choice to fill the bill for nonfiction.Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, GACopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition....

PreSchool-Grade 2-In picture-book format, Gibbons provides the basic facts about two popular sports. Using short, clear sentences, she defines terms, explains the rules, and describes scoring. One line in each book mentions the equipment necessary for each game, but the information is well augmented by clearly labeled, colorful drawings showing additional gear, such as shin guards for soccer players or protective covering for the baseball catcher. Both books contain diagrams of the game fields. However, the words selected for the brief glossaries seem arbitrary; for example, "cleat" is defined in Soccer, but not in Baseball. Zoo

From Publishers Weekly
Gibbons, an established creator of award-winning nonfiction, now turns her attention to zoos. In her familiar style, combining very simple line drawings, bold colors and an informative narrative, she leads youngsters through an entire day at a large zoo. She includes all sorts of workers: maintenance, food service, keepers, veterinarians and security guards. Unfortunately, this entry is less successful than earlier books. The narrative is informative but neither terribly lively nor exciting. The problem might be in the limitations of her graphic style when paired with this topic. The brilliant details and hues of her machinery and landscapes don't translate as well to her animalsthey lack vitality and interest. Workmanlike, quite useful, but not a first choice. Ages 4-8. Caves and Caverns

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-In straightforward, clear prose and colorful, text-related illustrations, Gibbons describes the formation and physical features of caves. Some of the pictures are labeled, and many depict people of varying ages exploring the different kinds of subterranean spaces. Plant and animal life found underground is briefly mentioned. The term "spelunker" is defined; oddly, "cavern" is not. Rules and supplies needed for spelunking are given, along with a short list of caves for enthusiasts to visit. Unfortunately, Gibbons's popular, child-friendly style is somewhat marred by unexplained circles (flashlights? spotlights?) that appear in each illustration. Young readers are likely to find them distracting. Both Jenny Wood's Caves (Gareth Stevens, 1991) and Lionel Bender's Cave (Watts, 1989) cover more ground...

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Another quality nonfiction title from a veteran author. Gibbons presents an abundance of information about these "powerful, graceful, and majestic animals" in a pleasing and well-organized format. Using succinct and interesting language complemented by colorful and accurate illustrations, she describes the history of horses, their anatomy, how they communicate through sounds and body movement, care and grooming (including the wide range of tools needed to maintain a healthy coat), and different breeds. Finally, readers learn that horses "are good friends and companions." Thoroughbreds, Welsh ponies, Clydesdales, and many others are shown grazing and prancing across the pages, and the carefully placed captions define terminology and often clarify or add to the text.
