Book Review
Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her...

A Pocket for Corduroy is a delightful companion to Dan Freeman's beloved Corduroy. Lisa takes her teddy bear Corduroy to the Laundromat (not to be washed--just for company). When Lisa's mother warns her to take the things out of her pockets before washing them, Corduroy realizes with some consternation that he doesn't have any pockets! While poking around for pocket prospects, he crawls inside a bag of wet laundry. A complicated comedy of errors ensues, involving an artist, a temporary disrobing, and Swan Flakes (they look curiously like snow), until the touching denouement when Lisa sews a pocket on her best friend's green overalls and tucks his name inside. (Ages 3 to 8)

Book Review
Grandma Dowdel's back! She's just as feisty and terrifying and goodhearted as she was in Richard Peck's A Long Way from Chicago, and every bit as funny. In the first book, a Newbery Honor winner, Grandma's rampages were seen through the eyes of her grandson Joey, who, with his sister, Mary Alice, was sent down from Chicago for a week every summer to visit. But now it's 1937 and Joey has gone off to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps, while 15-year-old Mary Alice has to go stay with Grandma alone--for a whole year, maybe longer. From the very first moment when she arrives at the depot clutching her Philco portable radio and her cat, Bootsie, Mary Alice knows it won't be easy. And it's not. She has to sleep alone in the attic, attend a hick town school where in spite of her worn-out coat she's "the rich girl...

Earl the Squirrel

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–A posthumous publication of a manuscript by the creator of Corduroy (Viking, 1968). Earl's mother thinks that his friend Jill (a little girl) is spoiling her son when she gives him an acorn, a nutcracker, and her doll's red scarf, so Earl sets out to prove that he can find acorns on his own. The red scarf becomes a sack, a hat, and a bullfighter's cape, and the young squirrel comes back with a harvest of acorns and returns the scarf. The scarlet scarf leaps out of Freeman's otherwise black-and-white scratchboard illustrations. The pictures are full of energy and detail, and Earl is both cheeky and endearing. Kids will laugh when Conrad the bull gets stuck in the tree as Earl indignantly and fearlessly snatches the precious scarf from his horns, only to be plonked on the head by an...

Manuelo, the Playing Mantis

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-Though Freeman died in 1978, his love for storytelling and, in particular, his love for music live on through this previously unpublished tale of determination personified in the character of a praying mantis. The lonely insect longs to join other creatures in making music, but lacks the chirp of the crickets or the croak of the frogs. He also fails at building his own instruments, as a reed made into a flute makes no noise, the flower of a trumpet vine does not blow, and his "snippy" claws break the strings of a twig-and-cobweb harp. Finally, an intelligent and observant spider agrees to help him, if he promises not to eat her for dinner. An artistic collaboration is born as Debby Webster spins web and other objects into an instrument that will bring music into Manuelo's life. The rich...

From School Library Journal
PreS Don Freeman's Corduroy (Viking, 1968) has always been a welcome figure to children, but these two spinoffs from the classic bear's story are too cutesy and watered down to provoke much interest. Both board books transport Corduroy (with pocket intact) from the realistic world which he normally shares with Lisa to an anthropomorphic suburb, filled with cartoon-like stuffed animals and dolls that could give Strawberry Shortcake a run for her money. Corduroy Goes to the Doctor, the stronger of the two, follows the procedures of a physical exam from beginning to end, and, thus, may be useful for those needing books about doctor visits for the nursery set. Corduroy's Busy Street has no storyline; rather, it's a series of one-page introductions to some of the workers one might meet in a ``typical''...
