From Publishers Weekly
A familiar story line yields its share of amusement in this competent if unexceptional picture book. Elliot Fry can cope with most of life's little anxieties--his mother's complaints about mud tracks across the kitchen floor, his father's aversion to the harmonica, his sister's tattling. But when his mother announces Uncle Abe's impending visit, Elliot draws the line at rooming with him: "It's not fair! I'M LEAVING!" His parents, however, are two steps ahead, and Elliot's intended drama fizzles when they offer a suitcase and suggest snacks and appropriate runaway attire. After three trips around the block, Elliot returns, to be greeted with a burst of attention. Brimner maintains a steady tone throughout, while Fernandes contributes spirited, busy illustrations. From Publishers Weekly
Featuring a variety of voices, Munschs (Love You Forever) light, energetic paper-over-board book is well suited for reading aloud. Just after Jillian dons a brand-new ribbon dress, with pink and red ribbons flowing from under the bib-like collar, she encounters a tuxedo-clad fellow running down the road, laceless shoes in hand. Chiming, Im late. Im lost!/ Im late. Im lost! the harried groom fears that he is going to miss his own wedding. Jillian helpfully tears two ribbons off her dress, uses them to lace his shoes and lends him a skateboard to expedite his trip to the church. To the tune of similar refrains, the girl hands out ribbons (and a variety of transports) to bail out the tardy bride, whose hair is disheveled; a family with a wedding gift in need of wrapping, etc. Though Jillians good deeds leave her...

K-Gr 2--When Victor adopts Teelo, a soon-to-be-homeless cat, and takes him to his peaceful little cabin on Cloud Island, Teelo is thoroughly pleased with his idyllic new life. Then, in quick succession, Victor brings home a rooster, three hens, a terrier, a snake, and a parrot. Each new animal brings more disruption to Teelo's ordered life as, one by one, his favorite napping spots are usurped by a newcomer. Upon overhearing Victor tease about how quiet a visit to Thunder Rock would be compared to the noise at home, Teelo stows away on the man's kayak. Instead of peace, however, the feline discovers that the pandemonium caused by all of the wild creatures is overwhelming and he is happy to return home. The tale's moral is reminiscent of the many variations of the Yiddish folktale "It Could Always Be Worse."...

From Booklist
Ages 2-5. Little Mouse is very tired, but when Mommy takes her to have a "nice nap," she begins to cry. She cries so hard she floods her room and manages to float her bed out the window. She floats down the river and out to sea. The sea creatures come to see what the problem is and stay to play with her until she falls asleep. Eventually her understanding mom retrieves her and takes her back home, where she finishes her nap. Although the story is predictable and is related in a conversational style that borders on saccharine, the little mouse's behavior will be both amusing and familiar to toddlers. The Claymation-like illustrations (a note explains that the artwork is rendered in a pliable modeling material) are what really save the day. They are truly fantastic; especially vibrant are the 3-D scenes of the sea creatures...

Everything Grows

From School Library Journal
PreS- Gr 2-- This book uses full-color photos to illustrate the lyrics of one of Raffi's loveliest songs: ``A blade of grass, fingers and toes,/ Hair on my head,/ A red, red, rose./ Everything grows, anyone knows . . .'' Unfortunately, the photos have a contrived look; that they show child-oriented objects (puppies, corn on the cob, dandelion fluff) and faces from several races compensates only a little. Like the song's lyrics, they are simple, direct, and warm; but they are shallow and belie the deeper meaning of the words. Lyrics and the song's melody line (transcribed with three sharps--very difficult for beginning musicians to play), with simple guitar chords, appear on the final page. This effort does not stand on its own as a picture book, nor does it do justice to the song it represents. --Liza Bliss,...
Fear of Angelina Domino

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Five-year-old Angelina loves all animals-until she gets a scratchy, skittish kitten that frightens her. She then becomes afraid of all animals, even a gerbil in a pet shop. Her friend Josephine gets fed up and angry, and decides to scare Angelina by depositing a huge stray cat on her bed. However, Hector turns out to be just the pet to cure the girl's fear. Though it cues in on childhood anxieties, the long text drags and presses its point too hard. The cheerful full-page and spot paintings are full of movement and should help draw readers into the story. This title may be useful for bibliotherapy, but it does not stand out as a picture book.Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Paperback edition....

PreSchool-Grade 3-In his third adventure, the feline with a penchant for trouble finds himself adrift on a log after chasing a rat onto a precarious branch over the sea. Many waves and a whale or two later, he is rescued by a young girl and her grandfather. The summer passes with Teelo making himself quite at home onboard the sailboat, winning the heart of Lilly and the sneezes of Grandpa. As the fall comes, the old man heads the boat to the city dock, passing Cloud Island. The cat's curiosity leads to another dunk in the sea, and this time his original owner, Victor the Vet, is paddling by in his kayak. Aaron's Awful Allergies

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1--Aaron loves his house full of pets, but when he is diagnosed with allergies, he must find new homes for his dog, cats, and guinea pigs. While he is upset at having to do so, he eventually realizes that his goldfish is fun, as are the butterflies and frogs he finds outside. The text only touches on the actual discussion of allergies, focusing more on the child's feelings. The tone of the writing is warm, and the colorful gouache illustrations add humorous touches while capturing Aaron's devastation at losing his beloved animals and his gradual acceptance of his problem. A useful book to help young allergy sufferers to realize that there is indeed life after furry pets.Christine A. Winsome animals, birds, butterflies, stars, moons, and flowers dance and swirl through the full-page illustrations, giving an air of pleasure, warmth, and security. Beyond Old McDonald: Silly Poems from Down on the Farm

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3–Hoce employs wordplay in many of these 30 selections. About a fearless hen that braves fire or killer bees, he says, "My chicken may be many things/But she surely isn't chicken." Familiar phrases, such as "holy cow," become subjects of poems; only in this barnyard, it's "Holey Cow!" that captures everyone's attention, "For when she takes a tiny step/Milk leaks everywhere." The humor is age appropriate and poems about "ants in my plants" and a hoarse horse will appeal to children who are beginning to enjoy playing with language. Making use of end rhymes, the schemes and rhythms are familiar and predictable. Some of the selections are more successful than others and several phrases, such as "on the lam" or "swan song," might need some explanation. Fernandes's watercolor illustrations...

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-As its title would indicate, reminiscence is the inspiration for this poignant piece of nostalgia. A young girl describes a town's attempts to save a dilapidated historical carousel through a fund-raiser in which people bid on individual horses for adoption and restoration. The child's grandfather pays for "Starflyer," his late wife's favorite horse when she rode the carousel years earlier. After seeing the workmen repair some of the mounts, the youngster encourages her Grandpa to employ his artistic talents and decorate "Starflyer" himself. The project prompts him to share recollections of his wife's special qualities and personal history with his granddaughter as he paints related objects on the wooden horse. The final product proves a grand tribute to a beloved woman. Charming...
