From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5?The prolific writer of juvenile sports fiction takes a crack at nonfiction. He describes nine dramatic moments from baseball's historical past, featuring the likes of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Reggie Jackson, and Jim Abbott. These accounts depict the courageous aspects as well as the spectacular, including Dave Dravecky's comeback after cancer surgery, and the hobbled Kirk Gibson's game-winning home run in the 1988 World Series. Christopher tends to drift to his fictional roots as a number of the stories are laced with manufactured feelings, thoughts, and quotes. He also tends to generalize: "As the crowd in Fenway Park watched Ted Williams run off the field for the last time, they told each other, 'There goes the greatest hitter that ever lived.' " While his portrayals of these moments are...

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-- A Stephen King-style mystery for the younger set."Doesn't it make you wonder?" Brett is asked after he unearths a skateboard and claims it as his own. The plot builds suspensefully, yet readers never learn who buried the object, or why Brett can do difficult tricks he never dreamed of attempting before. Eventually he figures out the age-old adage "to thine own self be true," returning to his old skateboard and relying on his own abilities. Followers of Christopher's other novels and Thrasher , a skateboard magazine, will enjoy this. Although some savvy readers will be annoyed by the use of the term "rink" when referring to a skateboarding area, they will appreciate Christopher's descriptions of tricks. Illustrated with realistic black-and-white drawings. --Blair Christolon, Prince William...

Then he runs into Riley, the best snowboarder and most popular boy in the eighth grade, and soon rumors are being spread about his past–that he was in a gang, did drugs, and that his mother is in prison. Matt must find a way to prove his innocence before Riley's campaign ruins him. The story is formulaic and laden with clichéd language but it might appeal to sports-minded reluctant readers.–Kristina Aaronson, Henniker Community School, NH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc....

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6. Christopher systematically describes Jordan's career, starting in high school and following through his college, Olympic, and professional days (with the stop off at baseball). The book ends with the Bulls' loss to Orlando in the 1995 season playoffs. Those familiar with the athlete's career will probably already know some of the anecdotes covered in this book. For example, there's the oft-repeated fact that Jordan didn't make the varsity basketball squad in his sophomore year in high school, and his trials as a minor league baseball player are common knowledge. Yet, many fans will find this clearly written title among the most satisfying of all of the Jordan biographies. Although the author mentions controversies involving his subject's gambling and the tragedy of his father's murder, he...

From AudioFile
Matt Christopher has a large following of boys who love his sports stories. In this baseball tale a boy gets some coaching from a mysterious figure and then deals with the attention his prowess brings. It will delight the same audience and, in addition, takes an otherwise run-of-the-mill story and makes it especially appealing. Joe Ferris, the story's narrator, and Isaac Shaw, who reads the part of Syl, the young baseball prodigy, lead a cast of young actors in a first-rate production. Listeners will find the changing voices easy to follow and delight in their variety. A good choice to keep kids in the back seat tuned-in. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Grade 4-8-Hothead Daren McCall can't control his temper. He thinks the world is out to get him and blames his errors and failures-both on and off the basketball court-on everyone else. When his friends are barely speaking to him and the coach has threatened to bench him or kick him off the team, Daren finally realizes his problem. This is a good story with plenty of game action. It gets its lesson across without being preachy and holds readers' interest. The characters are clearly drawn and likable. Although they are probably junior-high age, and the subject matter, theme, and action, will keep older readers engaged, the reading level and simple explanations of basketball plays and defenses make the story accessible to younger children.
