From Publishers Weekly
What's a teacher to do when all of the students in her class have the same first name? In this offbeat alphabet book, Mrs. Tuttle has found what she believes is an easy solution. Mrs. T. distinguishes the 25 Matthews in her kindergarten by associating the first letter of each boy's last name with one of his attributes. For example, "Matthew A. is affectionate" and "Matthew G. has trouble with glue." By the penultimate page, readers have met the entire class, save for the new kid: a boy named Matthew (of course) who takes his place in the line-up right after Matthew Y. and is sporting lots of zippers. Following a fairly standard ABC-book template, each page is devoted to a letter that's featured in an upperhand corner. Throughout, Catalanotto (Emily's Art) makes a departure from his customary, portrait-flavored...

The Jewish holidays are called the "jewels in the crown" of the Jewish year. This jewel of a collection by respected author Gilda Berger is a celebration of Jewish traditions, including Bible stories, time lines, recipes, crafts, and commentaries on the holidays. Each chapter covers one Jewish holiday, with a retelling of a related story from the Bible, followed by sections called "What We Celebrate," "How We Celebrate," and "Crafts and Food." A time line in each chapter places the origins of that holiday in its historical context, and a map of the Middle East and a complete index are also included. Glowing paintings by Peter Catalanotto introduce and follow each Bible story. The crafts and recipes are written with careful, simple directions, illustrated with clear diagrams when appropriate. Children (with a little help from...
An Angel for Solomon Singer
Author: Cynthia Rylant Book Review
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0531070824
Availability: Ships within 2-3 days.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up-- Solomon Singer is a middle-aged man who lives in a hotel for men in New York City. One night his solitary wanderings take him into a restaurant where he reads these words on the menu: ``The Westway Cafe -- where all your dreams come true. '' A soft-voiced waiter (metaphorically named Angel) welcomes him and invites him back. Each night Singer returns, ordering food and, silently, ordering his wishes for the things he remembers from an Indiana boyhood. Rylant has sketched a spare portrait, in flawless, graceful prose, of a man weighted down by hopelessness. Readers do not know the details of his circumstances, but they will feel his forlornness acutely. There is a symbolic and ambiguous quality to this book, which, despite its uplifting ending, is heightened by the illustrations. Catalanotto's...

As in their previous collaboration Who Came Down That Road? , Lyon and Catalanotto here offer an atmospheric, shimmering glance backwards--this time at the Anasazi pueblos at Mesa Verde. Although Lyon's poem is told from the point of view and in the tone of a reflective adult, Catalanotto wisely focuses the story through his luminous paintings on the experiences of a girl who visits the canyon as a tourist. She imagines--as if she were dreaming, seeing through the scrim of historical time--the Pueblo people who 800 years before "plaited sandals, wove baskets / coiled clay into pots." Then, "one day / when even trees were hungry / they turned their backs" on their cliff dwellings "leaving us / far in the future" standing "amazed / at the people / who built this dream / who lit its walls / with fire and stories."...
Happy Birthday, America

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Independence and patriotism are hard concepts for the very young to grasp. Osborne tackles this challenge through a nostalgic recollection of a small-town Fourth of July celebration. Food, fun, and family fill the day, with firemen; members of the Kiwanis, American Legion, and Knights ofColumbus; and a local dance school and band all playing their parts. "Yankee Doodle," "Stars and Stripes Forever," Lady Liberty, reading from the Declaration of Independence, and a community singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" lead right into the "Oooooh!" "Ahhhh!" "Wow!" sparked by the fireworks. Finally, a happy, tired family drives home. Though most children would rather be at an event than read about the nice time others have, Osborne's text is an agreeable slice of life. Catalanotto's illustrations...

PreSchool-Grade 1-A companion volume to Matthew A. B. C. (Atheneum, 2002), this is a counting book with a clever joke at the end. Mrs. Tuttle runs a dog obedience class and has 20 Dalmatians to teach-all named Daisy. Catalanotto's watercolor illustrations show each dog, page by page, as she and her unique characteristics are described. Daisy 3 plays three instruments; Daisy 4 does four tricks, etc. All of the canines exude winning personalities in their eyes and smiles, and their attire ranges from swimming goggles and flippers to Cinderella's glass slippers. For libraries that never seem to have enough counting books, this is a solid choice.Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VACopyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Publishers Weekly
Childlike narration and diffused, impressionistic watercolors seamlessly stitch together a heartwarming celebration of family love. As in Fred Marcellino's Puss in Boots, the main characters appear in an arresting joint portrait on the front cover of the book, with the title and credits relegated to the back. The text, like a quiet voice-over in a film, begins before the title page: "My daddy's a painter," says the narrator. Father and daughter meet mostly at mealtimes-reading the comics, cooking, doing magic tricks-while the mother looks on and comments. "We're very good dancers," the girl announces as the father strikes a flamboyant pose, gripping a rose in his teeth. "'Silly,' says Mommy. 'Funny,' says me." Because she patiently gives her father time to work, the girl is rewarded after dinner with admittance...

Catalanotto (The Painter; Dylan's Day Out) subtly conveys the value of creating art for art's sake in this tender picture book. When Emily's first grade teacher announces an art contest for which a judge will choose the best entry, Emily is skeptical: "Does the judge know which is better?" she asks. Nevertheless, each day Emily paints a new piece of art and, near the end of the week, she chooses to display "her new favorite," a watercolor of her dog, Thor, with his rather large ears at attention. When the judge first chooses Emily's piece because she mistakes Thor for a rabbit then rejects Emily's painting when she learns he's a dog (because of the judge's fear of dogs), Emily buries her painting (" `I'll never paint again,' she whispers"). But a reassuring exchange with her best friend rekindles Emily's passion...

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 1–Sophia, a tabby cat, has 16 kittens. Using different-colored collars for each one, the author introduces both colors and community helpers: "Teal kitten cures with Louann, the pediatrician" and "Chartreuse kitten directs with Celia, the crossing guard." After their busy days, the kittens are reunited with an anxious Sophia during a colorful party. Catalanotto's sepia-like pictures are highlighted with the color introduced. For example, the color tan appears in the grocery bag and in the clerk's uniform. "Rust" appears along the pipes that Tony the plumber is repairing as well as in his shirt. The kittens also have touches of color. The art has a lot of child appeal, as do the popular concepts, and the text is bold and easy to read. A book of high interest to teachers and...
