FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Michele Wilbur

This entry in "WildWorld" series focuses on the world of prairie animals including bison, wild horses, hawks and prairie dogs. In the 1700s bison dominated the prairies but today many live on ranches. Despite their size, bison are good runners with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. Bison are herbivores and may cover up to 10 to 15 miles in a day to find food. Hawks live in a variety of climates from the cold Arctic air of Alaska and Canada to the desert heat of Arizona. Popular hawk watching areas include Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania; Golden Gate, California; and Coastal Blend, Texas. The smallest hawk is the sharp-shinned hawk, the size of a blue jay. Female hawks are larger and stronger than the males but both sexes have excellent vision. Prairie dogs are busy animals with their jumping, digging, kissing, wrestling and chasing. Next to humans, they have the most complex language system of any animal studied by scientists. Prairie dogs are considered to be a keystone species, meaning that scientists believe that more than 180 other animal species are dependent on them. Years ago all horses were wild but today most are cared for by their owners. Wild horses, known as mustangs, exist in many countries including Canada, China and Argentina. They recognize one another by each one's smell and their keen sense of smell helps them survive against predators. This book includes an index, Internet sites and vivid photographs. To help reinforce learning, at the end of each section readers can document their own adventure with each animal. 2004, NorthWord Press, Ages 8 to 12.
