Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Virginia W. Reddy, BA, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)Description: This is the seventh edition of a comprehensive textbook of rheumatology, with focus divided equally between the basic sciences that drive rheumatology and the clinical spectrum of rheumatologic disease. The previous edition was published in 2001. Purpose: The original The Textbook of Rheumatology set out to equal or better any existing clinical rheumatology text and to provide the first in-depth textbook covering the basic sciences that form the framework of rheumatology. The first edition and all those that have followed achieved these lofty goals. This newest edition acknowledges the great strides made over the last few years in the basic sciences that drive rheumatology. The editors strive to provide comprehensive discussion of the basic sciences in the context of current achievement and future opportunities for treatment of specific diseases. Now more than ever, in the growing age of biologic therapy, rheumatologists need a comprehensive understanding of the basic integrated sciences and how they continue to lead to advancement in the understanding and treatment of rheumatic disease. This textbook, and its accompanying DVD and web site "e-dition" updates, provide an invaluable resource for understanding the present and future of rheumatology. Audience: It is written at an advanced level, primarily for practitioners in rheumatology and orthopedics. It also would be an invaluable resource for any general practitioner or internist desiring to learn more about rheumatology. The editors are world-renowned experts in the field, with specific interests ranging from basic science to clinical science to clinical practice. Many of the contributing authors are also recognized as leaders in the field. Features: The book is divided into two large volumes. Volume I is largely devoted to basic sciences, exploring the biology and pathology of joints and connective tissues, as well as mechanisms of autoimmunity and inflammation. This volume also covers broad issues in approaching rheumatic disease, including diagnostics. Volume II focuses on specific rheumatologic diseases, with in-depth discussions of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of the most common rheumatic diseases. It also covers rarer rheumatologic disease and rheumatic disease accompanying systemic disorders. It concludes with a discussion of the overlapping fields of rheumatology and orthopedic surgery, with a basic discussion of surgical management of arthritis. The chapters are comprehensive and uniformly well written. Most of the pages contain tables, illustrations, or pictures to capture the attention of the reader. All of the graphics are of excellent quality. The only downside to this book is that, because it is so comprehensive, it is very heavy and not at all portable. The decision of the editors, therefore, to establish an "e-dition" in the form of a web site providing readers with the latest data and their interpretations, is invaluable. Assessment: Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology has always been, indisputably, THE textbook of rheumatology. With this latest edition, the editors have continued a long tradition of focus on basic sciences as well as clinical rheumatic disease. This dual focus is more important now than ever, with the field of rheumatology advancing by leaps and bounds in our understanding of the pathophysiology of the diseases, and therefore our potential therapeutic targets. The seventh edition brings a much needed comprehensive discussion of the current understanding of the basic science of rheumatic disease as well as the clinical management of these diseases. By creating a web site with ongoing updates about the continual advancement in the studies of rheumatic disease, the editors also acknowledge the need for constant updates in this field of exciting growth. No other textbook of rheumatology has its comprehensive approach and emphasis on basic science, while continuing to provide in-depth and accurate clinical rheumatology discussions. As the definitive textbook of rheumatology, this is a must for every rheumatologist's library.
