FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

Created in association with the American Museum of Natural History, two Flip Out and Learn books by Christine Corning Malloy, illus. by Aaron Leighton, introduce science and nature topics tucked into a sturdy slipcase. The Solar System extends into a long panorama of the sun, moon and planets. The backs of the sturdy cardstock panels record brief facts about the solar system, and an attached eight-page booklet offers more detailed information. The Blue Whale pulls out to depict one very large mammal plus accompanying points of interest. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Gimmicks are attention getting, and often, with books, may be a deterrent rather than an enhancement. In this new book, the concept works. There are sturdy pages filled with facts about blue whales. They are the kind of facts kids love-"A 110 foot whale is as long as 8 cars placed bumper to bumper . . ." The information has obviously been vetted; the book was produced in association with the American Museum of Natural History. Once kids have been through the book and learned about the size, characteristics, feeding habits, etc. of this sea behemoth, the two end covers made of sturdy board can be pulled apart. The pages, in accordion form, create a great picture of the blue whale. Interesting, fact-filled and fun. A nice choice for any young reader who is eager to learn. Part of the "Flip Out & Learn" series that even lists more books and other resources for more information. 2003, Chronicle, Ages 4 up.
