FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

Two paper-over-board storybooks illustrated by Debi Gliori, each with a CD of the tales read aloud, entertain and help children wind down. In Debi Gliori's Nursery Rhymes, three modern day kids retell traditional tales from the time they rise in the morning until they are tucked in at night. Fun facts about the rhymes are included (e.g., Little Bo-Peep may date "back to a hide-and-seek game played by children in the 14th century" and "Four-and twenty blackbirds/ Baked in a pie" may have been a real Italian pie recipe from 1549, which called for live birds). In Debi Gliori's Bedtime Stories, she offers storytime folk favorites such as The Little Red Hen as well as popular fables such as The Lion and the Mouse. Her mixed-media pictures brim with wit and humor; Jack Sprat and his wife, for instance, appear as a fish and a whale. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
