FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson

This illustrated children's dictionary is designed to teach young children new language skills and the use of alphabetical reference books. The clear definitions of words will help to strengthen a young person's vocabulary. The book is organized in two sections. The front section is the dictionary, where words are easily found and the illustrations and pictures are printed in four-color. The pictures and drawings complement and clarify the definitions. Each page has the alphabet on the side, and the letter that is described on that particular page is highlighted in blue so that younger children will be able to quickly find the definition they are looking for. The back section is a thesaurus, and the layout is different enough from the dictionary that children will easily be able to tell the difference. Besides explaining normal definitions, parts of speech, forms, and verb tenses, the dictionary emphasizes various words that sound the same but have different meanings (homophones), explains how to pronounce words that are difficult or awkward to say, and gives the antonym of several words. Some of the words are on a feature page that gives more depth into the vocabulary and subject matter. 2003, Kingfisher Publications,
