FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature - Francine Thomas
This charming book asks a question that surely must be on the minds of many young children. What do their toys do all day while they are at school? One little girl sets out to discover the answer about her very own teddy bear. She loves her bear and thinks he is sweet, but suspects he does not just sit around all day waiting for her to return home. So she peeks and spies and stares at him from where he cannot see her. "You wait. I'm gonna catch you!" She tempts him with his favorite TV show, but he does not even turn his head to look. Then she sets the perfect trap. No bear can resist the temptation of an open jar of honey. Ah, ha. She does catch himin a manner of speaking. The evidence is all too plain to see as her stuffed friend quietly relaxes with a firm round belly. "I bet you couldn't stop. The honey jar is empty now . . . and you're about to pop! See . . . I caught you!" Unpretentious yet appealing colorful illustrations add to this rhyming delight. It is just the kind of story young children will ask for again and again. 2004, Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages 3 mo. to 3. Kirkus Reviews While holding her teddy bear aloft, one pig-tailed girl ponders, "I wonder what he does all day when I am off at school." In order to find out, she stays home and spies on him, emphatically stating the book's refrain: "You wait. I'm gonna catch you!" She pretends her eyes are closed and watches him. She sits on a tree outside and peers in through her window. She hides behind the door, but no matter what she tries, she can't catch the bear in action. What she doesn't know, but the illustrations show, is that because she's so busy watching teddy, she's missing what the other toys are doing. A pair of stuffed mice plays instruments, and a rag doll moves about quite freely. Finally the youngster tempts the bear with his favorite food. Does it work? Well, sort of. The radiant art bursts with colors like cherry red, periwinkle blue, and sunshine yellow. This will tickle the imagination of any youngster who's ever wondered what toys are up to when unobserved.
