FROM OUR EDITORS

The Barnes & Noble Review
Fabulous lift-the-flaps hide parts of the body in this vibrant, surprising board book from the author and illustrator of Where Is Baby's Belly Button?

Rosy-cheeked children and patterns galore fill Marion Dane Bauer and Karen Katz's book, testing toddlers' knowledge by hiding hands, ears, belly buttons, and more beneath large flaps. Pages ask readers to guess what's inside a girl's mittens, for example, revealing her hands underneath when the flap is lifted. Other hidden parts include ears under a multicolored hat, an elbow hidden inside a flowery shirtsleeve, and a back that's protected by a long coat, but of course "the very best secret of all" is "Me!" beneath a purple blanet at the end.

Bauer and Katz have created a busy and bright learning lift-the-flap that's truly special. Unlike other books, this treat covers more than just the obvious body parts, using Katz's welcoming, eye-candy illustrations to draw readers in. A cheery board book that'll keep them smiling and guessing. Matt Warner

This book is a perfect addition to Karen Katz's flap board book series.

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

Little ones play a dressed-up version of peek-a-boo in Marion Dane Bauer's board book Toes, Ears, & Nose!, illus. by Karen Katz. "Inside my mittens I've got," Bauer begins. Readers lift decorative pink mittens to find "fingers." Snow boots, earmuffs and a scarf hide other body parts; vibrant colors and patterns add pizzazz.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Under all those clothes that we wear are our bodies, and one of the things kids should be able to identify and name are their major body parts. This board book contains flaps which represent clothing kids would typically wear. For example, the young girl on the opening page is wearing a pair of mittens and the implied question is what is inside those mittens. Lift the mittens up and you see her fingers as well as the word printed on the flap. It progresses with toes, ears, nose, elbow, knee, back, belly button, teeth, tongue, and eyes, but best of all, on the last page under the blanket is a cute little girl. The book has a multicultural cast and is a great way to help kids learn about their bodies. 2003, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster,
