FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature - Judy Chernak This is indeed an "eye-popping" and "unique" music book, with its "flaps, tabs, word balloons and friendly, dancing creatures" that promises to teach youngsters the elements of music. The colors are eye-popping, too, and so is the sheer volume of stuff competing for attention on each square inch of every page of this sturdy board book that has a probably unprecedented number of push-pull tabs. However, by the time you get to the end, with its ingenious keyboard that actually plays sharps and flats as well as white keys, you may be too exhausted to enjoy the Really Truly Amazing Pop-Up piżżżce de resistance that fairly attacks as you turn that last page! The paper engineering created and copyrighted by Damian Johnston is actually quite remarkable. But it remains to be seen as to whether a youngster can learn amidst so much clutter. The board book concept--as well as the cute kitty and bunny and wooden soldier friends--also seems rather patronizing for the publisher-suggested age group of 8 and up.
