Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Designed for kids, this dictionary includes words, definitions and a lot more for the middle school crowd. In addition to a basic guide to pronunciation and a guide to using the dictionary, plus a list of initials, acronyms and abbreviations, most entries contain an example of the word used in a sentence. Most pages have an illustration, a word history fact box, something relating to parts of speech or additional tidbits of information. At the end there are examples of the Braille Alphabet, American Sign Language, maps, country flags and facts, such as a list of facts about the states and a map that shows the states, the two-character postal abbreviation, the state capitals and the U.S. Presidents, including the current one. In order to see how current the terms are, I checked out a few, including the word, virus. The first definition was what one would expect with a cross-reference to AIDS and then a third definition relating to computer viruses. There is a definition for DVD, and Inuit, however, if you want to find out what macaroni meant in the song Yankee Doodle you will need to head for your big unabridged dictionary. A very useful and contemporary reference for home or library, but too weighty to carry around in a backpack. 2003 (orig. 1996), Scholastic,
