You Can Go to the Potty

ANNOTATION

A guide for parents and children to use for toilet training.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The authors of the acclaimed Sears Parenting Library introduce two new books for young children to read with caregivers. Eat Healthy, Feel Great gives kids the tools to make their own wise food choices. Quick and easy recipes that kids can make with adult supervision are also included. You Can Go to the Potty clearly introduces the basic steps of toilet learning in a natural, non-pressured way. The text encourages a child's motivation in using the toilet, while offering tips to parents on developmental readiness. With concise and reassuring text and lively illustrations, these two books by the foremost authorities on attachment parenting are must haves. Both books include detachable posters as learning aids.

Author Biography: William Sears is associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California School of Medicine, Irvine. Martha Sears is a registered nurse and a parenting and breastfeeding consultant. Christie Watts Kelly has a degree in elementary education from the University of Memphis. Renee Andriani is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

The four food groups are reconfigured into "green-light," "yellow-light" and "red-light" foods in Eat Healthy, Feel Great by William Sears, Martha Sears and Christie Watts Kelly, illus. by Ren e Andriani. This addition to the Sears Children's Library puts a kid-friendly spin on nutrition and presents a handful of easy-to-prepare recipes (can you guess the "red-light" foods? Among them: marshmallows and "cheez puffs"). "Notes for Parents and Caregivers" opens the offering and a pullout poster is included. Also available from the same team: You Can Go to the Potty. Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.

This clever little book helps new moms and dads negotiate the potty training phase with as much ease as possible. Based on the 'attachment parenting' philosophy of the Sears, it views potty training or learning, as they see it, as a natural occurrence that will take place with ease if the child is ready, physically and emotionally, and the parents take a supportive role. Cartoon-like drawings explain each step in this book meant to be shared with the toddler. A forward to parents discusses the Sears' philosophy helping to put the adults at ease and reassuring them that kids may vary in their timeline for success. A cute poster illustrating the steps to using the potty is included. 2002, Little Brown, Ages Adult.

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-The first book is a recitation on basic nutrition that explains why it is important to eat the right foods. The authors make suggestions for "green-light foods," i.e., those that are good for you and that you can eat as much of as you'd like, and describes "yellow-light" and "red-light" foods. They also explain certain additives such as dyes and preservatives. Potty simply provides the facts that parents can share with their little ones. The material in both books is factual, but not particularly exciting or inspiring. The watercolor illustrations are acceptable and work with the instructional texts, and each volume has a fold-out poster. Prefaces for parents and caregivers provide some general advice on the topic at hand. Supplemental purchases.-Roxanne Burg, Thousand Oaks Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
