FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo

Arthur had a problem that his friends did not. His little sister, D. W., was a copycat. She told him she was practicing for next year when she would be going to school. Arthur was not amused. His friends had their own concerns: The Brain couldn't find his pet lizard; Binky had his tough-guy image to maintain; Francine was trying to fit all her sports equipment in her backpack; Buster was sleepy; and Muffy had to decide what to wear to school. After they arrived, their teacher asked them to hand in their homework. Arthur realized he did not have his with him. Just then there was a knock at the classroom door. It was D. W. with Arthur's homework—she was still practicing for next year. Told in a matter-of-fact way, there is no suspense here. This will appeal mostly to fans of the "Arthur" television series. There is a maze on the back in which the reader needs to locate Arthur's school supplies. It is the most interesting part of this book. 2004, Little Brown, Ages 5 to 7.
