FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Aside from the title and the fact that the book is part of the "Arthur Chapter Book" series, this story really features his friend Buster. It is Buster who is the goalie on the hockey team made up of the whole gang. But Buster feels the weight of winning or loosing, rests with him. He is haunted by the appearance and advice of the legendary goalie¿¿¿Jacques Nettoyer. While the advice from the ghost is good, it does not really match Buster's style of play. It is only when his coach urges him to find what works best for him that Buster is able to come to terms with his strengths and skills and rid himself of the ghost. There is also a subplot with the local newspaper where his mother is the editor and their decision to run a series about the hockey team. It is a good story that will appeal to boys and girls and one that presents a positive message. 2001, Little Brown,
