From Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Finley examines paintings of several clans and regions of Australia. Artistic methods and the use of materials such as wood, bark, and rock are carefully explained. Because Aboriginal myth and views about land are tied directly to the art, the author includes a discussion of these beliefs and their relationship to the paintings. She also discusses the flowering of modern Aboriginal art associated with the movement for equality and land rights. Clear, full-color photographs of the art, people, and landscape illustrate the text.Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Book Description
Kon-Tiki is the record of an astonishing adventure -- a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean by raft. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero, Kon-Tiki. He decided to prove his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. On April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl and five other adventurers sailed from Peru on a balsa log raft. After three months on the open sea, encountering raging storms, whales, and sharks, they sighted land -- the Polynesian island of Puka Puka.Translated into sixty-five languages, Kon-Tiki is a classic, inspiring tale of daring and courage -- a magnificent saga of men against the sea.Washington Square Press' Enriched Classics present...

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-When three farmers, digging a well in a field near Xi'an, China, unearthed a pottery head, they were completely unaware of the magnitude of their discovery. As archaeologists began to excavate the site, they found an entire army of life-sized pottery soldiers of every rank, horses, chariots, weapons-an army fit for an emperor. In lively fashion, this handsome book recounts the story of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang, who ordered the army's construction to ensure that he remain safe and powerful if his quest for unending life was unsuccessful. As the excellent colorful photographs make clear, none of the soldiers look alike. Their costumes reflect their rank, and their faces probably resemble the people with whom the many potters were acquainted. O'Connor also speculates on the ...

Book Description
Following an Australian government edict in 1931, black aboriginal children and children of mixed marriages were gathered up and taken to settlements to be institutionally assimilated. In Rabbit-Proof Fence, award-wining author Doris Pilkington traces the story of her mother, Molly, one of three young girls uprooted from their community in Southwestern Australia and taken to the Moore River Native Settlement. There, Molly and her relatives Gracie and Daisy were forbidden to speak their native language, forced to abandon their heritage, and taught to be culturally white. After regular stays in solitary confinement, the three girls planned and executed a daring escape from the grim camp.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5 A book that conveys neither a sense of uniqueness nor points out cultural similarities. Following "our" arrival in Australia and a brief tour of Melbourne, we are whisked off to the farming community of Tatyoon and the small, by Australian standards, King family ranch. While some information is provided about sheep raising and shearing, the special use of dogs to herd sheep is only briefly noted. The color photographs seem posed and are often either out of focus or overlit. A "Facts" page is appended to provide statistics and very simplified general information. A short glossary defines some words (barbecue, parakeet) but omits others such as aboriginal. Decline this visit, especially if Choogoowarra, Australian Sheep Station (Macmillan, 1972; o.p.) by John Kiddell is already in your collection....

Gr 2-5--Twelve double-page spreads cover a few specifics about these countries in a typeface and vocabulary best suited to middle school students, but without enough information for that audience. Both books are organized by colors that represent various aspects of the countries. The illustrations, watercolors in broad strokes, are pretty enough but not very informative. Germany begins with an introduction and outline map that shows its location in the world and the bordering countries. White stands for the walls of Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria where Mad King Ludwig lavished his money. Yellow is the candlelight on traditional Christmas trees, and is accompanied by an illustration of a child who looks very sad. Silver is a Mercedes. Pink is the eyes of the witch who caught Hansel and Gretel. The topics...
The Aboriginal Peoples of Australia (First Peoples)
Author: Anne Bartlett Book Review
Format: Hardcover
ISBN: 0822548542

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-These books focus on the indigenous people of Australia and East Africa. Appealing cover photographs feature an adult and child and the pages are framed to create a photo-album look. The texts begin with information on the land, plants, and animals to set a framework for how people live before moving on to history and current cultural practices (home life, music and dance, crafts, language, and religion). Bartlett provides a fairly straightforward look at the treatment of Aboriginal peoples by the Australian government and the measures that have been taken to restore tribal rights, land, and relationships. The focus on Masai life centers a bit more on the land, animals, and early inhabitants of the area. Although the texts do not provide enough information for in-depth reports, the...

Book Description
"What, my Lady Disdain, are you yet living?" These famous lines from Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing delightfully shows the verbal sparring between the reluctant lovers, Beatrice and Benedick who are happily brought together at the end by the schemes of their friends. And, no story is complete without at least one evil character, Don John, who unsuccessfully tries to tear apart the wedding plans of Hero and Claudio, the other lovers in this sparkling tale. Written in rhyming couplets, Much Ado About Nothing, the eighth book in this...

Grade 3-6–An attractive addition to the Lewins' personal adventure series, which includes Gorilla Walk (1999) and Elephant Quest (2000, both HarperCollins). Ted's handsome, realistic watercolors are complemented by Betsy's colorful field sketches as the two explore Kakadu National Park and Kangaroo Island, respectively, in the hot north and chilly south of the Australian continent. Salt-water crocodiles, dingoes, an echidna, and a platypus are among the wildlife observed, as are encounters with some brush-tailed possums and smallish kangaroos that aggressively demand the Lewins' dinner at "tucker" time (Australian lingo is defined). A few black-and-tan sketches of Aboriginal life are included, oddly labeled "all circa 1900," with no explanation. Nonetheless, this eye-catching and informative title is a...

Grade 5-8–While it may be missed by most readers, the foreword written by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is a fine introduction to this title. The three chapters discuss the war in Europe and in the Pacific, and on the U.S. home front. The majority of the text is composed of short autobiographical articles written by adults who experienced World War II as children or as teenagers. The author has included herself in one of the sketches. Additional historical information ties the profiles together. The text is liberally illustrated with half- to full-page vintage photos with captions that supply additional information. Small pictures of the featured children appear with their stories. The text concludes with an epilogue, an excellent time line, and postscripts about the individuals today....
Shanghai Diary: A Young Girl's Journey from Hitler's Hate to War-Torn China

Book Description
Against the backdrop of looming world war and Hitler's "Final Solution," 11-year-old Ursula Bacon and her family made the terrifying 8,000-mile voyage to Shanghai with its promise of freedom. Instead they found overcrowded ghettos filled with desperately poor Chinese and Japanese. Amid the city's abysmal conditions and its prostitutes, drug dealers, and rats, Ursula discovered a city of exotic, eccentric, and exciting humanity. Years later, when the fate of friends and family left behind in Germany became known and documented, the hard life endured by those in the Shanghai ghetto seemed to pale in comparison. As a result, the "Shanghai Jews" have been all but lost in history. Ursula's eight-year struggle is a story to be shared and remembered. As she watches her best friend die from fever, befriends a Buddhist monk,...
Last Princess: The Story of Princess Ka'iulani of Hawai'i

From Publishers Weekly
Born in 1875, Princess Ka'iulani was heir to the throne of the kingdom of Hawai'i. When she was 11, the girl's storybook childhood came to an abrupt end. Her mother fell ill, and on her deathbed shared with her daughter a vision of the future: Ka'iulani would go far away from her country for a long time, would not marry and would never rule Hawai'i. Fay Stanley's clear, straightforward text explains how this grim prophesy came true. While the princess attended boarding school in England, Hawai'i experienced political upheaval that eventually led to revolution and the country's annexation by the United States. Although Ka'iulani's brief life was not as action-filled as many subjects of children's biographies, it is certainly a story worth telling. The author's daughter, a veteran author and illustrator of the...

Midwest Book Review
My Place is a wonderfully intimate history of Australia starting in 1988 and going back 200 years to 1788. Young readers learn its history by being told the story of one particular place by the generations of Australian children who have lived there. Rich in detail, with maps that the successive generations of children have draw, My place could completely occupy a child (or an entire class of children). Nadia Wheatly is an historian and in collaboration with illustrator Donna Rawlins have successfully combined their mutual curiosity about the past to show the story of Australia as seen by children. Highly recommended! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

True History of the Kelly Gang

Book Review
"What is it about we Australians, eh?" demands a schoolteacher near the end of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. "Do we not have a Jefferson? A Disraeli? Might not we find someone better to admire than a horse-thief and a murderer?" It's the author's sole nod to the contradictory feelings Ned Kelly continues to evoke today, more than a century after his death. A psychopathic killer to some, a crusading folk hero to others, Kelly was a sharpshooting outlaw who eluded a brutal police manhunt for nearly two years. For better or worse, he's now a part of the Australian national myth. Indeed, the opening ceremonies for the Sydney Olympics featured an army of Ned Kellys dancing about to Irish music, which puts him in the symbolic company of both kangaroos and Olivia Newton-John.

What's to be gained from telling...
